Thoughts on Daytime Emmy Nominations 2013

Here are my thoughts on the Daytime Emmy Nominations for 2013. This year are the awards 40th anniversary. They are scheduled for Sunday June 16, 2013 on HLN (otherwise known as Father's Day) and will be held in Beverly Hills, California. To see the full list visit the NATAS site.

The honorary Daytime Emmy for Lifetime Achievement is going to Monty Hall and Bob Stewart. Monty Hall is best known as the co-creator and host of "Let's Make a Deal." Bob Stewart created such famous game shows as "To Tell the Truth", "Password" and "Pyramid", which are all series that focused on having regular people compete with stars to earn money or prizes.

This year five soaps were eligible for Daytime Emmys: The Bold & the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live and The Young & the Restless. We do not know yet how NATAS will handle the new versions of All My Children or One Life to Live as that has yet to be decided for 2014. In the outstanding lifestyle program category two YouTube shows were listed, so it is quite possible that AMC and OLTL will be treated like the other daily dramas. In total nominations including technical awards, the breakdown for the soaps are the following. Y&R leads the pack with 23, GH has 19, Days has 17, B&B has 15 and OLTL has 3. (Since OLTL only aired for nine episodes in 2012, in many categories they didn't even submit for a nomination.)

Outstanding Drama Series

B&B
Days
GH
OLTL
Y&R

Outstanding Writing Team

B&B
GH
OLTL
Y&R

Outstanding Directing Team

B&B
Days
GH
Y&R

Looking at these, all of the soaps that were eligible are listed in the drama series category. For writing and directing, Days and OLTL were omitted respectively.  Last year, General Hospital won for show and directing. Days won for writing, but this year aren't even nominated.

Lead Actress

Susan Flannery (Stephanie, B&B)
Peggy McCay (Caroline, Days)
Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R)
Heather Tom (Katie, B&B)

Heather Tom won this award last year and Susan and Michelle have previously won in this category. Peggy McCay has a primetime Emmy for her guest work. In 2012, Stephanie died, Caroline battled Alzheimer's Disease, Phyllis battled her past, and Katie went through depression after having her son.

Lead Actor

Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R)
Doug Davidson (Paul, Y&R)
Michael Muhney (Adam, Y&R)
Jason Thompson (Patrick, GH)

Tony Geary (Luke from GH) won in this category last year. Jack had paralysis and became addicted to drugs, Paul killed his son in self-defense, Adam helped to steal his father's company, and Patrick became an addict after his wife tragically died.

Last year, no actors or actresses from Y&R were nominated in the lead category. This year it looks like they tried to avoid that, but GH ended up getting fewer nominations.

Supporting Actress

Julie Marie Berman (Lulu, GH)
Jessica Collins (Avery, Y&R)
Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, Y&R)
Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, B&B)
Arianne Zucker (Nicole, Days)

Last year's winner Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis from GH) isn't nominated, so we will have a new winner. Only Julie Marie Berman has a Daytime Emmy though that was in the younger actress category. This is the third year in a row that Melissa Claire Egan was nominated in this category though in the past it was for her work on All My Children. Lulu dealt with being infertile, Avery was a crusading lawyer who fell in love with her sister's husband, Chelsea stopped being a con artist, Brooke lost Ridge and was there for Stephanie as she died, and Nicole had a late term miscarriage.

Supporting Actor

Bradford Anderson (Spinelli, GH)
Jeff Branson (Ronan, Y&R)
Scott Clifton (Liam, B&B)
Billy Miller (Billy, Y&R)

Last year's winner Jonathan Jackson (Lucky from GH) left the program and is on Nashville. The only person that was nominated last year in this category that is on this year's list is Bradford Anderson. Spinelli's best friend died and he was torn between his new love and his past, Ronan jeopardized his career for love, Liam ping pongee between Steffy and Hope, and Billy tried to stay sober.

Younger Actress

Kristen Alderson (Starr, GH)
Hunter King (Summer, Y&R)
Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy, Y&R)
Lindsey Morgan (Kristina, GH)

Younger Actor

Max Ehrich (Fen, Y&R)
Bryton James (Devon, Y&R)
Chandler Massey (Will, Days)
Freddie Smith (Sonny, Days)

In the younger categories the people who submitted that were in the right age group were nominated. There were no surprises as this list hasn't changed. It is weird seeing Kristen Alderson listed for GH and not OLTL. Last year's female winner was Christel Khalil (Lily on Y&R) who has aged out of the category. Chandler Massey who is nominated again this year won in 2012. Starr lost her daughter and fiance in a tragic accident, Summer came to town all grown up, Steffy wanted Liam who wanted Hope, Kristina married Trey and was kidnapped. Fen became a bully and loved Summer, Devon dealt with being a Chancellor and getting his hearing back, and Will and Sonny fell in love.

As always I am rooting for the person who has the best reel to win. Yes there were snubs as GH has so few nominations. A part of me wonders if this was a backlash from last year and also due to the fact that there are less nominees. The supporting actress has five people nominated like last year, and the younger categories have four each like before, but there are three less slots as lead actor, actress and supporting actor only have four nominees instead of five.
