Deadline.com has a story about the newest soap, Nickelodeon is going to be airing a new production called Reach for A Star. Click here to read the details.
According to the article, the new show will begin taping in March and be 80 episodes long. It will air on a nightly basis during Nick at Nite. Sony is the producer, and former General Hospital executive producer Jill Farren Phelps will be the executive producer along with Hisham Abed (The Hills). Josh Griffith who has soap writing credits as long as my arm will be the head writer.
My feeling on this is why not. The idea of a short term television show could be a good or bad thing. Would they air the program 5 days a week for 16 weeks, or 4 days a week for 20? The premise of a girl plucked from obscurity, meeting the object of her affections and becoming involved with him is a typical fantasy so I can understand why the concept would have worked as a telenovela.
When it comes to JFP, well she tends to do well short term on soap operas. Early in her stints with programs they can be magical, but long term things eventually fall apart frustrating viewers. An 80 episode show may completely avoid this problem. It will be interesting to see if the cast has anyone familiar to those of us who watch daytime. If that's the case, I'll be a lot more willing to sample the show. The guy from "The Hills" I have no comment about and I couldn't point at a story that Josh Griffith wrote and conceptualized, but since it is based on an existing plot, I am uncertain how much story needs to be written.
This may work like Degrassi did last week, or it may fail. At least Nick at Nite was willing to take a chance on another serialized program.
