This is my quick review of Eileen Davidson’s book “Diva Las Vegas”, which was written in 2010. It is her third soap opera mystery novel, (one additional book came out in 2011.) Ms. Davidson currently plays Ashley Abbott McCall on the Young and the Restless, but she has also appeared as Ashley on The Bold and the Beautiful. She also appeared in roles on the soap operas Days of Our Lives (Kristen, Susan and more), and Santa Barbara (Kelly Capwell). My summary/review does spoil some information, but does not give away the killer.
In this book, Alexis Peterson is a lot less busy at work as she had been as her character’s evil twin has been killed. Alex ends up at the Playboy Mansion Halloween party. Shana Stern (the ex-wife of one of Alex’s coworkers, Barry) was a playmate, and scored her an invite. Unfortunately for Alex and her best friend George, they find Shana dead in the haunted house. At this party, Alex and George went as Little Bo Peep and her sheep, which caused a bit of humor.
Frank Jakes is still a police detective for the LAPD, and involved with Alexis. They met in the first book, and now are quite serious. Initially Jakes had issues with Alex helping him solve crimes, but now he sees her as an asset.
Jakes and Alex work together to solve the mystery. It takes them to Las Vegas, and she combines sleuthing with soap operas. When she is not expected to be at a fan event, Alex is helping investigate. The fan event stuff seemed realistic to a point. What was funny was the aside the character made about how it had to be a fan when someone ran into her and said how great she looked, and she felt she looked awful. Well, what kind of fan would go up to an actor and say I think you are great, but you look like crap. That would take more chutzpah than most people have, then again there are some stories of viewers going up to actors and telling them they look better on television. Jakes meets an attractive policewoman, but he only has eyes for Alex. Unlike the other books, there is sex as Alex and Jakes sleep together.
The thread with Alex’s former husband Randy is also picked up as she sees him in the local supermarket. Instead of being calm, she goes off on him and yells that he is out to kill her. At the end of the book, the cliffhanger is that he asked for shared custody of her daughter.
By the end of the novel, the killer is revealed and it wasn’t someone who was expected. What I appreciated also was that progress was made in her relationship with Jakes as he spent time with her mother and daughter. It was time for that, and I liked that we got to know her best friend George a bit more.
That’s my preview of the third Soap Opera Mystery: Diva Las Vegas. This novel had some humor, some sex and a mystery. It touched upon one of the main things that performers face the fear of getting older, and how striving for that can sometimes backfire.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
