Days: PTSD Episode

On Thursday, January 26, 2012, Days of Our Lives aired a special episode that ended with a dedication to those in the armed services. The focus was about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and how it affected members of the military.

Jack Deveraux (Matthew Ashford) was not in the military serving overseas, but like those men and women he suffers from PTSD. Jack had been in Afghanistan reporting on the drug trade, got captured and spent a year in a cave as a hostage. He had been seeing Marlena (Deidre Hall) and as a physiatrist, she was the leader of this veterans’ group.

One of the stories that of Leslie seemed to be based on the person’s real life as according to this article Retired Capt. Leslie N. Smith was playing this role. She got a virus while serving in Bosnia that caused her to lose her vision in one eye and one leg. To read more about her story and how she came to be on Days click here.

The others unfortunately I haven’t been able to find out more information about. The characters names were Mike, Rob, Paco and Pat. Mike seemed to dislike Jack and was upset that he wouldn’t sit down. Rob was upset over how he couldn’t continue with his life plan of being military until retirement. Paco was more willing to have Jack there, as was Pat. Pat was late due to being a single mom, but she was good at listening to everyone’s issues.

This episode was very effective in how it tried to show how it isn’t easy to survive and move on from being in a war zone. It made me tear up a tad, as I thought about how so many people don’t make it home to their families.
