Y&R: Cassie Newman Tribute Episode

On Thursday May 24, 2012 in the US (May 23 in Canada), "The Young and the Restless" aired an anniversary/tribute episode in honor of the death of Cassie Newman (played by Camryn Grimes). The character passed away in 2005 in a car accident. This summary is not 100% in sequence, but is done based upon who shared scenes.

Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) ran into each other at Cassie's gravesite. They both leave her yellow flowers as it was her favorite color. They mention how short life is, and Victor leaves Nikki alone with the grave.

Nicholas (Josh Morrow) and Sharon (Sharon Case) talk about Cassie and how Nicholas got her a bear that was bigger than her when she was a little girl. Sharon was her mother, and while Nick wasn't her biological father, he adopted her and treated her as such. Nick and Sharon talk about what they missed not being able to see her grow up like graduate or fall in love.

Noah (Kevin Schmidt) is at Crimson Lights talking to Kevin (Greg Rikkart). Noah ends up at the grave by himself. He spends a couple of scenes talking to his late sister. Noah talks about how people say someone is in a better place when they die, because they don't have to deal with the negativity, though it doesn't help the people who are left behind.

Daniel (Michael Graziadei) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) are talking about how he caused Cassie's death. Cassie took the keys to Daniel's car and drove without a license, and he was passed out not knowing what was going on, so it was an accident. Phyllis wanted to do something to comfort him, Daisy (Yvonne Zima) walked in and started asking questions as she had no idea. Daniel then blurted out about killing someone, but wouldn't tell Daisy anything else. Daisy lets Phyllis take Lucy, and Daniel goes to make a call. Kevin meets Daniel at Jimmy's. While sitting at Jimmy's, Kevin gets a phone call. It is Daisy, Daniel leaves and Kevin admits that Daniel was there, but he had left. Daisy shows up to speak with Kevin. She doesn't understand why her brother won't tell her what happened. Off camera, Kevin explains to Daisy what happened between Daniel and Cassie. Daisy wonders why people could forgive Daniel, but not her. Kevin tells her forgiveness doesn't happen overnight and it is something she needs to earn.

Jack (Peter Bergman) is at his home, and his maid Mrs. Martinez stepped on his foot accidentally. This was a good thing as he felt it. Sarge (Darnell Williams) shows up and tests Jack's foot. They want to see Dr. Issac's for some tests. Nikki comes in crying, interrupting their joy. Jack asks what's wrong and then she mentions Cassie's death. Sarge and Jack cancel going to the hospital, so Jack can take care of Nikki.

Victor shows up at Sharon's with fried chicken, macaroni and beans, which was Cassie's favorite meal including chocolate chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Sharon asks Victor if he thinks if Cassie would approve of them seeing each other. Victor says Cassie would want them to be happy. Sharon asks if the cook can make more of the meal they had.

Nick and Phyllis talk about how they came full circle as parents who had to deal with a tragic accident to finding love, and having a family of their own. Off camera, Victoria calls Nick and gives her condolences. And yes she did as Cassie asked take care of her younger brother Nick. Nick tells Phyllis that it was great how she is supporting her son, by taking Lucy and going to visit him. They kiss.

Daniel goes to Cassie's grave. He talks about how many people came to her grave and how everything has changed.

There is a musical montage. During it, Sharon calls Nick, Nick calls Noah, Victor calls Nikki who is with Jack, Phyllis calls Daniel, but he doesn't answer his phone. Everyone that answered the calls is all together at Sharon's eating Cassie's favorite meal. They are looking at an old photo album of Cassie. Sharon makes a toast about how all the things that tear us apart some things will tie us together, Nick then says to Cassie.

While I didn't hate this episode, it reminded me again why I feel it was the wrong decision to kill Cassie all those years ago. Cassie should have been the next generation of the program, but she was killed at 15. Due to how the character died, I am glad they never decided to tarnish her memory by creating a lookalike twin or have the character come back from the dead.
