Today (May 21, 2012) the official announcement of Good Afternoon America was made by ABC click here to read the press release. This is the replacement show for "The Revolution", which was cancelled about four months after replacing One Life to Live. Good Afternoon America is a spinoff of Good Morning America and will air in the 2 PM EDT slot for a nine week period over the summer starting on July 9, 2012.
What this means for General Hospital is anyone's guess with Katie (named after Katie Couric) starting in September in its 3 PM slot? We still don’t know if GH is going to be moved to 2 PM in the east or if the network will allow affiliates to drop it to another place in the schedule like overnights or mornings, or take if off the air in particular markets. If the new GAA is successful, will we lose GH in quick fashion with little or no time to wrap up the show? I hope not, but I don't believe it is outside the realm of possibility.
This is scary for General Hospital fans along with those who support the genre as a whole. If GH falls how long will it be until NBC and CBS decide to have a soap opera free daytime television schedule? Is ABC using the summer to tryout GAA and then backdoor GH completely from the network? One has to wonder if that’s the plan after all. Then Katie won’t get the blame for General Hospital ending, and if GAA does well then it has a decent lead-in program. We shall see in the coming weeks what will happen in this developing story.
