Thoughts on Daytime Emmy Nominations 2012

Here are my thoughts on the Daytime Emmy Nominations for 2012. At this point we do not know if and when the awards will air, but they will be given out in LA. Click here for coverage from the NATAS.

The honorary Daytime Emmy is going to Bill Geddie one of the executive producers of "The View". Due to it being the last year that All My Children is eligible and how One Life to Live only had nine episodes in 2012, I must admit I am rooting for those shows and performers.

The overall tallies for soap operas are the following: AMC - 11, B&B - 11, Days - 15, GH - 23, OLTL - 11, Y&R – 16. If one just looks at acting nods: AMC – 3, B&B – 3, Days – 5, GH – 11, OLTL – 3, Y&R – 3. GH seems to have been the benefactor of the new system, which this year had actors submit a short two minute scene to get a pre-nomination. From there that lucky group got to select one full episode (two for B&B), the winners are based on how many votes they received based on the full episode. Personally I don't like that as votes for non-nominated performers do not count and those voters opinions' get discounted.

Outstanding Drama Series & Writing had the same nominees.
All My Children
Days of Our Lives
General Hospital
The Young and the Restless

Last year The Bold & the Beautiful got a threepeat for show and Y&R got the writing award. This year B&B wasn't even nominated. Sadly OLTL wasn't nominated either, much to my frustration.

Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series
B&B
GH
OLTL
Y&R

The same four shows were nominated last year and there was a tie as both B&B and Y&R won.

GH and Y&R got nominated in all the big three, Days & AMC got two each, and B&B & OLTL got one each. So everyone has a pony in the top categories.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Crystal Chappell as Carly, DAYS
Debbi Morgan as Angie, AMC
Erika Slezak as Viki, OLTL
Heather Tom as Katie, B&B
Laura Wright as Carly, GH

Last year’s winner was Laura Wright, and she along with everyone else has already gotten Daytime Emmys in acting. Crystal Chappell has one for Guiding Light for supporting acting (along with one for her web soap Venice), Debbi Morgan won a supporting actress Daytime Emmy over 20 years ago. If Erika Slezak wins she'll have 7 Emmys, which would make her the most Daytime Emmy award winning actor or actress in the history of daytime. (She's tied with Tony Geary and Justin Deas with six.) Heather Tom if she won would have the honor of getting awards for all three actress categories.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Maurice Benard as Sonny, GH
Anthony Geary as Luke, GH
John McCook as Eric, B&B
Darnell Williams as Jesse, AMC
Robert S. Woods as Bo, OLTL

Last year’s winner was Michael Park from As the World Turns, since the show is off the air and not eligible there won't be a repeat winner. I was most surprised over John McCook's nomination, and is the one actor in the category without an Emmy. Darnell and Bob both won over 20 years ago. I wonder if either won if that would be the longest time between Daytime Emmys for a performer.

it is kind of shocking to me that no one from Y&R was nominated in the lead category as the show got the big award nominations. When I look at the lead nominations this year, I was thinking about how I wish the Daytime Emmys would have group awards the way that they have for music, so people who have great scenes with a costar could both win.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Melissa Claire Egan as Annie, AMC
Genie Francis as Genevieve, Y&R
Nancy Lee Grahn as Alexis, GH
Elizabeth Hendrickson as Chloe, Y&R
Rebecca Herbst as Elizabeth, GH

Last year's winner Heather Tom is in the lead category this year, so there cannot be a repeat. Two of last year's nominees in this category are up again NLG and MCE. Only Genie and Nancy have won in this category in the past.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Bradford Anderson as Spinelli, GH
Matthew Ashford as Jack, DAYS
Sean Blakemore as Shawn, GH
Jonathan Jackson as Lucky, GH
Jason Thompson as Patrick, GH

This category could be renamed best supporting actor from GH, as even the sole nominee from Days of Our Lives, Matthew Ashford appeared on GH during his career. Last year Jonathan Jackson won this category and is the only one who has an Emmy in this group of guys.

Only four of the six shows were represented as no one from B&B or OLTL was nominated.

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
Molly Burnett as Melanie, DAYS
Shelley Hennig as Stephanie, DAYS
Christel Khalil as Lily, Y&R
Jacqueline MacInnes Wood as Steffy, B&B

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Eddie Alderson as Matthew, OLTL
Chad Duell as Michael, GH
Chandler Massey as Will, DAYS
Nathan Parsons as Ethan, GH

Last year's winners were Brittany Allen who wasn't even on AMC last year, and Scott Clifton from B&B who aged out of the category. So we aren't going to get a repeat. Shelley Hennig is on "The Secret Circle" in prime time. Nathan Parsons has left GH, while Eddie is no longer employed as OLTL is off the air. The younger actress category has all new people, while two of the four are new nominees for the guys. Five of the six shows have someone nominated.

Like I said at the top, this is the last year for AMC and most likely OLTL, so I'm rooting for them. I hope we get something on the show for these programs as that didn't happen in 2011.
