Getglue.com is a social media site, that I've seen more and more soap fans use to show their interests. The site, which was launched in 2009, allows people to "check-in" to their favorite shows.
What does someone get for checking in, an occasional offer and stickers. Yes, real life stickers. They are based upon what you watch and every thirty days you can request the next 20 you've earned in your viewing sequence. I wonder if this actually helps particular shows in the ratings, or is just a way to boost online chatter. If someone enjoys checking in, and likes to see comments from random strangers about television shows, you may want to check out this site. I find it interesting to see which shows are popular online along with how many others view my favorites.
This week Days of Our Lives is giving out a special sticker if you check in during the NBC broadcast of the show. I don't know if that is really incentive to watch the program, but it is sweeps and perhaps every little bit counts. ABC also has special General Hospital stickers you can earn, but I haven't seen anything beyond the normal sticker(s) for watching The Young & The Restless of The Bold & The Beautiful. Some prime time shows give weekly stickers for each episode focusing on different characters each week (like Mad Men), while others give daily stickers leading up to a season finale (like Nikita and Glee). Since you can check into DVDs, I'm surprised that soapclassics hasn't gotten around to utilizing this site, but I digress.
You can tie your getglue account into twitter or Facebook, so your timeline will show what programs you are watching. That's actually how I found out about the service as I saw it on my twitter feed and wondered what that was. You can also use it to make pals who watch some of the same shows as you do.
Getglue.com also allows you to check into things other than television shows, like movies, books, music and other interests. So if someone is looking for a way to share and show their love for a favorite this could be another avenue to sign up and explore.
