ATWT: James Stenbeck Story DVD Set & a Freebie

Today, May 31, 2012 it was announced that soapclassics.com was releasing yet another As the World Turns set. This one focuses on the character of James Stenbeck, played by Anthony Herrera. The ten episodes in this two disc set are from 1980 - 1989. The free episode was from Friday, November 6, 1987. Below is my summary of this episode.

James Stenbeck is on the loose and wants his son Paul (Andy Kavovit) all to himself taking him away from his mother Barbara (Colleen Zenk). Paul is with his best friend Andy (Scott DeFreitas) at Lucinda's place (Elizabeth Hubbard) that she shares with her husband John (Larry Bryggman). Paul tells Andy, that he took the bullets from Barbara's gun. While Andy and Paul are arguing in the woods, James appears and says "Hello, Paul." The teens went horseback riding, on the ridge, which is ironically where James wanted to coax Lucinda to send Paul to be snatched. Once John finds out where the boys are the doctor goes to rescue them as he doesn't want his son Andy to get hurt in the crossfire. Lucinda calls the police, and Hal (Ben Hendrickson) arrives along with Barbara. Margo (Hillary Bailey Smith) and Tom (Scott Hughes) also arrive at the house due to their professional interest. When John gets to the ridge, he sees James with the young men. John tries to stop James, and they fight over the gun. Unfortunately, John was not strong and wily enough to defeat Stenbeck. Before James can cause a fatal injury to John, Paul agrees to leave with his father. Andy ran away to safety and didn't hear the conversation. When John and Andy are back with Lucinda, John said it sounded like Paul wanted to go, but that was a lie. Sierra (Finn Carter) is upset to find out her mother Lucinda lied about James because of her missing husband Craig. It is believed that James may have just been using Craig's disappearance as a way to manipulate Lucinda, so it may have been nothing. Once John and Lucinda are alone together, John admits he is upset over Lucinda's lies. He wants some of his things moved to another room. Lucinda then exclaims she could kill James Stenbeck. Holden overhears Lucinda's call to Tonio (who is off screen). She says that she can tell Tonio where James is if he will kill Stenbeck for her.

Barbara and Emily (Melanie Smith) are at Fashions together. Hal is talking to a guard off screen. Barbara and Hal leave, Emily by herself at Fashions though a police guard is outside. James calls in the rain in Ruxton Hills and calls her. She goes to meet her and James with a gun. She writes down Steve's house in Ruxton Hills on a piece of paper and runs out leaving no one the wiser. James is relieved when Emily shows up at the house. Hal with another cop goes into Barbara's office at Fashions. When alone, Barbara sees the note Emily left, and goes after them. Back at Steve's house the generator is busted so it is freezing. The copter should there within an hour to whisk them away from Oakdale. Emily says that they can't take Paul with them. If he doesn't let Paul go, Emily won't go either. Emily shares with James that she is pregnant.

A lot of the action in this episode takes place at the hospital. It seems like the cafeteria was the place to be. Rod who isn't on this episode was being worked on as he was injured when rescuing Lily (Martha Byrne) from James. At the cafeteria we see Margo, Dusty (Brian Bloom), Bob (Don Hastings), Tom. Lily, Holden (Jon Hensley), Frannie and Sabrina (Julianne Moore in a dual role), Iva (Lisa Brown), Lance from Wyoming (sorry don't know the actor's name), Sierra and Seth (Steve Bassett). If I omitted anyone I apologize. Iva and Frannie talk about Rod, as do others due to how he risked his life. Sierra and Iva speak about Craig being missing in Greece. Holden and Iva also talk about how he knew about his sister Iva being Lily's biological mother. Holden tells Iva, that he is going to tell Lily how he knew before she did soon. Lily is still ignoring Lucinda, but seems to be civil with Iva. Emma (Kathleen Widdoes) is at the hospital as a patient due to having heart trouble. Frannie goes to see her, Bob as her doctor visits with her. Seth and Sabrina also talk with Seth's mom. While Seth's passion is writing, he has been running the farm, while Sabrina is a photographer. The interactions among Seth, Sabrina and Frannie are awkward due to Seth breaking it off with Frannie to be with Sabrina.

The other place to be was Lyla's (Anne Sward) house. Sierra (Finn Carter) came with baby Bryant. Sierra leaves and goes to her mother Lucinda's leaving the baby with his grandma Lyla. Joe and Maureen Peretti are at the door. There is a whole group of Casey's (Bill Shanks) family at the door including cousins and aunts. Casey invites them all to stay at their home, but it looks ilke Casey and Lyla will have nowhere to sleep. His nephews take over one bedroom, and Casey is invited to tent with them there. The Peretti family seems full of love, but also full of ruckus. Casey's mom was surprised that Lyla was a grandmother. And in the episode Casey admitted to Frannie that she was good with never having children of his own. Somehow Tom and Margo get a moment alone with baby Bryant. For that time, they talk about their broken marriage. Before they make any progress, the phone rings and they rush over to John and Lucinda's place.

A lot of characters appeared in this episode. While there wasn't romance, there was action, suspense and a cliffhanger. I was glad to read that the follow up episode appears on the James Stenbeck two disc set.
