Thoughts on Episode 8 of Dirty Soap

This is my summary of episode eight of Dirty Soap on E! The final episode of the season aired on November 13, 2011. It did not feature Kirsten Storms (Maxie on GH).

This bulk of this episode took place in California. At a restaurant, a discussion with Galen Gering (Rafe on Days of our Lives), his wife Jenna, Farah Fath (Gigi on One Life to Live), John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex on OLTL), Nadia Bjorlin (used to be Chloe on Days of our Lives) and Brandon Beemer (Owen on The Bold & the Beautiful) took place. It was decided they would go camping as a group. Kelly Monaco (Sam on General Hospital) was also on the trip along with Farah’s friends Nathaniel and Danny (who were never regulars on a soap opera.) On the camping trip, which took place at a beach (the way they were talking earlier in the episode, I was expecting them to go into the desert or to the mountains), the group hung out by a fire and drank. Things we’d been watching throughout the season were brought up and Kirsten’s health was referenced.

Kelly looked into branding herself and met with an expert in that field. He suggested she goes to a magic convention in Las Vegas. She does and looks into getting involved with a clothing line. Kelly realizes that her future on GH may be uncertain due to the outlook for daytime soap operas.

J.P. and Farah’s arc ended with J.P. telling Farah he would marry her someday. As they’ve been a couple for four years, and he never proposed Farah wondered if they had a future. Their lives are going through a major adjustment as they are moving cross country to California as taping for OLTL wraps on November 18.

Nadia and Brandon continue to deal with Nadia’s mother Fary, who holds Brandon in contempt. In this episode, Nadia met her mother for lunch and she invited a man along named Fernando. Even though, Fary knows that Nadia has a long-term live-in boyfriend, she does not respect the relationship as she set up a pseudo blind date that Brandon crashed due to a horrified text from Nadia. The tug-of-war continued, as it seems like eventually Nadia will have to choose between Brandon and her mother.

That’s my thoughts and summary on the season finale of Dirty Soap. The only thing I wish is that the program would have shown more about the industry. Other than Nadia’s last day at Days, we never were at Days again (and Galen works there) and unfortunately it seems like neither she nor Galen were working on the web soap Venice when this was done (which would have been great press) and show another connection as Chloe and Rafe are characters that seldom interacted on Days. We saw a bit at GH and OLTL, but obviously wanted more as it would have been funny to see how people react to Kelly and JP/Farah’s relationship. I also wish they did a better job explaining the connections among the actors. I’ve watched soap operas for many years, so I can connect the dots as I watched Days of Our Lives when Nadia, Farah and Kirsten worked together and later how Brandon was on the show (though he and Nadia started dating when she was not on Days). And that while Kelly only has worked with Kirsten, there are people both in the casts of Days and One Life to Live that she has shared screen time at either her current soap opera General Hospital and her former show Port Charles. These people weren’t on Dirty Soap, but it would have made her inclusion once Kirsten got sick seem more organic as Kelly’s story was separate from those of JP/Farah and Nadia/Brandon as they hang out together and go to each other for advice.

That said, I did like the show, and if it does come back for a second season I plan to watch it. Though if it does come back, I’d expect even less behind the scenes material as only Galen and Kelly have regular gigs on a daytime soap opera.
