AMC: J.R. Martinez (Brot) won DWTS

Just finished watching the last episode of Dancing with the Stars for 2011, and J.R. Martinez won the mirrorball trophy with his partner Karina.

My initial feeling is good for J.R. and finally some happy news for fans of All My Children. At the end of the first round of scoring on Tuesday's show, (this included the judges' scores from Monday and Tuesday), J.R. was at the bottom. Ricki and Derek had 84, Rob and Cheryl had 83 and J.R. and Karina had 82. Ricki had the least with combining in the votes from the viewers and came in third. The remaining two pairs danced again, and Rob and J.R. were both given 30s for their performances. Since Rob had been ahead of J.R. by one point, that difference stayed the same.

Considering J.R. was one point behind in judges' votes, it was based on who the viewers believed did the best job. Karina has been appearing on DWTS since the third season (though not every cycle), and it took her this long to win. A lot of people felt it was time for a different pro to win, so perhaps that was also in their favor. This is also only the second time a person best know for soap operas won DWTS, as Kelly Monaco won in season one, though the show was a lot less elaborate than it is today.

I thought J.R. had a good chance to win when people who weren't soap fans were openly supporting him in the competition. When you go to boards or even speak to people in real life and the first person they mention liking is the same, it is a good sign they have a decent chance to make it to the end of the season.

The new season (number 14) of DWTS is set to begin on March 19, 2012. The cast list has yet to be finalized obviously, but hopefully that season brings interesting routines and celebrities.
