On the Friday, March 9, 2012 episode of “The Bold & The Beautiful”, Eric (John McCook) and Stephanie (Susan Flannery) were remarried by Gladys (guest star comedienne Phyllis Diller).
The wedding of Eric and Stephanie was bizarre beyond words. Gladys who had been a pal of the Sally Spectra (the late Darlene Conley) and a hairdresser now has a new gig as a gardener. She came to the Forrester mansion to help with the flowers, and while she did that overheard what Eric and Stephanie were discussing. Gladys could and would solve their problem for a price of 30 dollars as she did the needed paperwork to be authorized to marry people.
What was wacky about this was can two people get married in the state of California with no witnesses and just someone who can marry them. Initially Stephanie didn’t understand why Eric wanted to get married again, as they have been there before and it didn’t work out, as he moved on to other women like Brooke and Donna. Of course, neither of those relationships lasted though it netted him two additional children in Rick and Bridget, as Brooke is their mother.
What was nice was this situation is that Eric wanted the commitment and Stephanie didn’t care even if it would have been a major anniversary coming up based on their original wedding date. She knew they were together and that was enough. There were some romantic words on Eric’s end, but it was realistic in the sense that they have both been there before. The past was not glossed over even in this weird circumstance. Eventually Stephanie relented and said, “I do” though it was the least romantic wedding I’ve seen on a soap between two people who love one another that weren’t drunk or forced into marriage. Once Stephanie uttered the magic words, Gladys asked for her money. She really didn’t do anything except listen to them talk and bicker.
This was an interesting and comical lead in to the 25th anniversary episode, which will be airing later in the month. Hopefully if Eric and Stephanie get married again on screen it will be as memorable and oddly entertaining.
