On Friday, March 30, 2012, a new ten episode "As the World Turns" set was released focusing on the characters of Lily and Holden (Martha Byrne and Jon Hensley). To promote this, soapclassics.com posted the ATWT, which originally aired on February 13, 1986. Here is a summary on the free episode, which will be posted for a limited time.
The main thrust of this episode has to do with Kim (Kathryn Hays) having a stalker. Frannie (Julianne Moore) discovers that it is her fiance Doug (John Wesley Shipp), who is the guilty party.
Early in the episode Kim got a note from her stalker, and John (Larry Bryggman) and Lisa (Eileen Fulton) were with her. Lisa is the only person who knows about Kim's pregnancy outside of Dr. Samuels (Maggie Burke). Kim planned on sharing the news with her husband Bob (Don Hastings) that evening. Kevin (Steven Webber) shares his suspicions of both Doug and Marsha (Giulia Pagano) with Betsy (Lindsey Frost) and Hal (Benjamin Hendrickson). Initially Hal doesn't believe him, but once he released that Marsha was lying, that perhaps Kevin is not guilty of the attack that left Heather (Tonya Pinkins) in a coma.
Marsha felt people were becoming suspicious of Doug and wanted them to leave town together, but he said no. Doug had a secret shrine to Kim at his restaurant Caroline's (named after his late wife). Frannie discovered it as she was going to meet Doug before they went to Acapulco. (What is it with soap operas scripted by Doug Marland and Acapulco…) This room had a reel to reel recording of Kim singing "Someone to Watch Over Me", along with all sorts of memorabilia from when Kim was a professional singer. Doug had been a busboy at a restaurant in Houston, where Kim performed and that is where the obsession began. He didn't think his actions were creepy in the least, and all he wanted was a family that included Kim. Coming to Oakdale, he was so glad that he found happiness with Frannie as that was part of his plan. Hearing all of this shocked Frannie and she passed out, as Kim appeared and found the shrine. Kim had tried to reach Bob, but Lisa ran into him sharing the news about Margo and Tom's marriage. Margo told her that it was over off camera, and she needed some comfort.
The other story on this episode had to do with Lily's life and the Lilden relationship. Lily, Holden, Dusty (Brian Bloom) and Meg (Jennifer Ashe) are in the stables. They are discussing party plans, but Holden decides to stay in the barn. The rest go back to the Walsh house. Then Lily becomes upset after she overhears that her mother Lucinda is going to cut her inheritance in half giving the rest to her sister Sierra. She wants Dusty (Brian Bloom) to be there for her, but he doesn't think Lucinda doing that is upsetting at all. John is unhappy because of what he feels about Sierra and needs to be cheered up and Dusty wants to help him by going out to dinner. Meg share the plans with Holden and then leaves. Lily walks into the barn once the others have left, and Holden is with Ma'am the cat. Thankfully, she does not hear what Holden said to the feline. They spar about while she may be the boss, he is in control, she slaps him, and then they kiss.
If anyone wants more information on the Holden and Lily set visit welovesoaps.net for an episode listing. Many of the ATWT episodes I've seen from the 1980s have large case. I found it fun to see one that was so focused on two stories that I've heard a lot about, but did not see in full.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
