Thoughts about "The Doctors" - March 1974

Another month's worth of episodes of "The Doctors" has aired on RetroTV. Below are my thoughts on what has aired for the month of March 1974.

Alan and Margo decided to move out of Matt and Maggie's and she may stop her birth control without telling him. Their marriage is a lot better now due to Margo knowing that Alan also mourned when she miscarried. Margo now seems to want to be Toni's friend not her rival. It looks like Marty had his surgery off camera, or it will happen soon per Alan's words.

Toni seemed upset over Mike reaching out to Matt and Maggie, but ignoring her. She felt his silence said everything, while others thought she shouldn't give up on her marriage. How her pregnancy happened has been glossed over, and that the worst thing between them was her calling him a baby. Greta was thrilled that her stepbrother was coming home.

Erich started asking Carolee questions, as he saw a pregnant woman, and wanted to know about what it was like for her. Of course, he has no idea that Carolee isn't his biological mother. Carolee told Steve what was going on, and that perhaps they need to tell Erich the truth. They also talked about the idea of Carolee adopting the boy, as she does love him. Since Ann is a pediatrician, they spoke to her, and she felt it was a good idea. Later in the month, Carolee brought Erich to see Lauri, whom he gave a flower. Thankfully Hank isn't jealous of a little boy's crush on his fiance. Hank decided he does want to go back to neurosurgery full time, and Nick was thrilled. We also found out that Lauri had a former boyfriend who collected stamps, and had one from the Seychelles, which is how she heard of that country, sharing where it is geographically.

The tape was finally played in its entirety and everyone knew what John did. Matt fired John over what happened, with Cathy. The guy, who knifed, Carl Hendryx ran into John at a pub. The bartender was none other than Richard Sanders best known as "Les Nessman" on "WKRP in Cincinnati". Penny went out with Sam the nurse to a movie. Penny thought Sam was dumb, as the thing Sam liked most about the movie was the hot lead actor, as Penny related to the young guy who killed the person hurting his mother. Nick and John had a confrontation later that night, and John ended up dead. They had a fight, Nick literally threw a book at him, John knocked him out, Penny came in, and then shot John, in a slo-mo sequence. Althea had no idea what was going on, as she was still in the hospital. She is doing better, but everyone is trying to protect her. Penny was arrested for the first degree murder. Cadman said he had to work all night, so the 16 year old could sleep on his office couch and wouldn't have to be in a jail cell with adults awaiting her arraignment.

Adam Reynolds visited Carolee and Steve at home to discuss the potential of Carolee adopting Erich. They had a nice chat, and Nick called. Adam went to see Nick, and repeated how he is going upstate for another important case. He helped Nick as much as he could and gave Nick a referral. Penny got bail for $100,000, and the show explained how Penny could get bail, while years earlier Steve could not. (Were they worried about letters and phone calls, perhaps, but that amused me.) Since Nick wouldn't tell Althea what was going on, he had to figure out how to get the money on his own. Nick had some cash on hand, as did Matt, who took a mortgage out on his home. Steve was asked, but due to setting up a private practice, the Aldriches had a mortgage already and couldn't donate, and Mona who probably had more than enough money wasn't mentioned. Penny's father was in the Far East, and not available to give collateral, but Ann came to the rescue and gave Nick $40,000. She had her own money, the money she inherited from her late parents, and whatever was left over when her late husband Chris died. We also found out about how Ann's husband Chris cheated on her, which is why they ended up in Africa trying to rebuild their relationship when he died. She was scared to tell Nick, but truthfully she should. Nick was glad to secure the money, as Penny being out on bail, meant that Althea could leave the hospital though this has yet to happen. Althea was shocked that John was dead, and had been told Penny had the flu, and was being taken care of by a neighbor. She also is being cut off from all newspapers and television, as either could announce that her daughter has been charged with murder.

Those were the highlights of March 1974. There were two missing episodes (March 5 & 6) and one preemption March 15. I wonder how long it will take for Penny to get out of the home for troubled kids or if we will even see it. Michael Hawkins (aka the first Frank on "Ryan's Hope" played a cop, which was amusing as Frank was a cop before Ryan's Hope premiered, and the character became a lawyer and then a politician.)
