Awkward. is a serialized comedy (not a dramedy) that airs on MTV on Tuesday’s at 11 PM EDT. This weekend I caught the first three of its twelve episodes that are airing this year.
Jenna Hamilton was an invisible girl, who suddenly became the talk of the high school due to a freak accident. Jenna took out some aspirin, dropped the bottle, knocked over a hair dryer, got an awful letter and posted something on her blog about death. All these things together made people assume, she was suicidal, but she was just clumsy.
In the pilot episode, Jenna walked around with a neck brace and an embarrassing cast on her left arm that left it elevated. Obviously this is awkward and she was not allowed to be invisible any longer. Over the summer, she lost her virginity at a camp to a popular boy named Matty. Once school began, she had no idea what their relationship was or even if they had a relationship. He would look at her longingly in school, and eventually they had clandestine encounters.
Jenna’s parents had her when they were teens themselves. Her father seems sensible, while her mother does not. It seems like her mom wants to be her friend instead of her parent. Her guidance counselor Valerie though makes her mother seem sane. Her best friend Tamara seems like she wants popularity, but the popular kids ignore her the way that Jenna had been ignored before her accident.
Her main adversary is an overweight cheerleader named Sadie, who also likes Matty. He wants nothing to do with Sadie, but puts up with her due as his best friend Jake is dating her best friend Lissa. Jake though seems to also like Jenna even if he has been dating Lissa for three months. If Jake didn’t he wouldn’t have admitted how Lissa offered him a certain kind, which would allow her to still be a part of the abstinence club.
So in the first three episodes, Jenna has sex numerous times with the same guy after losing her virginity, ends up breaking her arm and then dislocating her shoulder, while getting the cast off of her arm, gets photographed topless, flashes people after the fact in frustration and sees the guy she likes in a hot tub with another girl.
The show isn’t for those who have issues with teen sex and slightly coarse language, but if you don’t it may be worth a try. I hope they allow Jenna to continue on the road to self-respect even if she continues to be a bit awkward.
