GH: More Stories About the Hospital these days

One of the first moves of General Hospital’s new head writer Garin Wolf was to make Dr. Robin Scorpio-Drake, the Chief of Staff of General Hospital. Since then, we’ve seen a lot more of General Hospital. There isn’t quarantine, a bomb, chemical weapons, or a hostage crisis just more of the hospital. This entry has spoilers.

Robin’s (Kimberly McCullough) new job has caused conflict. She wants to do the best she can and doesn’t expect to have the position for life. She isn’t Dr. Steve Hardy (miss you Steve Hardy may you rest in peace John Beradino), her husband Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) who was Chief of Staff for a time, the late Alan Quatermaine or Monica Quartermaine. She has her own rules and wants to change the hospital to make it a more efficient place to work. Robin has changed color-coding along with other things that have driven every crazy from her husband who wants to work more, to her brother-in-law Matt Hunter, to the former chief of staff Steve who lost his job due to a debacle with his sister Elizabeth, who is also a nurse. To keep Robin from too crazy, the other hospital employees seem to appreciate when Patrick romances her. It is nice to see a committed married couple have conflict, but also be intimate. Not playing into a happy couple is a boring couple is something I appreciate.

These days we are also seeing Monica again on screen. There was a joke about how she went to every medical convention on the planet, and it surely seemed that way. She’s been giving advice to Robin about how to live with working with her husband. Monica would know as she and Alan battled within and outside of General Hospital. On top of that, her adoptive son Jason has recently become a patient. He got into another car accident, and had another brain injury. What is it about Jason that he hurts himself that way? Since Monica is Jason’s only family, she was the one who got to choose his treatment. This was tied into Patrick and Matt as they disagreed on treatment. Robin intervened as well. Jason had another setback and per spoilers he is going to have surgery. It is supposed to change Jason, but we don’t know if he will be more like the boy that was lost after his first car accident in the 90s.

Siobhan was also in the car accident (after getting into a fight with Elizabeth, which caused a first round of injuries). She’s a patient in the hospital again. What is awful, is that Elizabeth nearly killed her by giving her the wrong medicine during surgery after she was caught in a fire set by Lucky. Also someone is trying to kill her as she lies in her hospital bed. From spoilers, it looks like she is going to die. Will the hospital be held responsible for this or Elizabeth for that matter?

While I have liked seeing more of the hospital, I have to wonder if that will continue. I like seeing characters being friends and interacting in their work environment. That said I don’t think it would be realistic for the regular cast members to be shot or get into car accidents on a weekly basis. Perhaps we will see the hospital setting without patients or maybe we will get guest stars in those roles. That will be interesting to see.
