Days: Sonny's Gay and Not Everyone is Okay

This summer Days of Our Lives introduced their first regularly airing gay male character Jackson Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) who goes by the nickname Sonny. He’s the youngest and only biological child of Justin and Adrienne. Warning: this article contains speculation based on long term spoilers, but no specific information.

Sonny came back to his parents’ hometown of Salem to see them. He decided to stay, and now has to deal with living in the “backwards” town. The person everyone was most fearful about hearing the news was Sonny’s Great Uncle Victor. His reaction was surprise, but he sided with Sonny. Victor won’t stop loving the young man because of being homosexual. Some may say that his reaction was tame and Sonny’s sounded too much like a public service announcement, but I felt they needed to get it out of the way. If Victor had known about Sonny, that would have been odd, and I appreciated seeing that beat in the story.

What Days is doing with Sonny is not a coming out plot as he knows who he is and what kind of person he is attracted to, instead it is about being himself and dealing with those around him. The only person so far that has taken offense to Sonny’s gayness is T. Kinsey had taken a photo of T and Sonny at the beach, before anyone knew Sonny was gay. The picture had a quote about them having a potential bromance, and once T found out he got pissed. The thing is when I’ve seen the term bromance used in parlance; it refers to a close friendship between two men who aren’t sexually intimate.

The rest of the younger characters have no issue with Sonny. Kinsey is disappointed, as she wanted to date Sonny, but was willing for them to be friends. Gabi’s upset over T’s treatment of Sonny. Will (Chandler Massey) defended Sonny to T, but is the rumor true and Will is gay also. Early spoilers had Will gay and romantically involved with Chad (who is currently in a heterosexual relationship with Abby.)

The spoilers about Will being gay haven’t disappeared, so is he in the closet intentionally or unintentionally? Will Gabi be accepting finding out her sister-in-law’s son who is also her boyfriend wants to be with a guy? It does look like Gabi and Will are getting closer to being sexually intimate, and if that happens would they go as far as having Gabi get pregnant. I hope not, regardless of Will’s sexuality as the program has enough babies.

If Will and Sonny become a romantic duo they have more issues than just people not accepting them in a same sex relationship. Will’s great-grandmother Caroline hates Sonny’s great uncle Victor. Will’s mother is Catholic, and Sonny’s family is Eastern Orthodox and neither religion recognizes same sex pairings.

Hopefully Days will go all the way when writing Sonny’s new romance. Whether he is paired with a newly realized gay Will or someone new, I hope they treat the character with respect.
