Thoughts about "The Doctors" - April 1974

Another month's worth of episodes of "The Doctors" has aired on RetroTV. Below are my thoughts on what has aired for the month of April 1974.

Toni got a letter from Mike, and she was glad he was coming home to her. Captain Zeb Kirk destroyed her happiness as Mike is presumed dead due to the ship going on fire. She was in denial at first, but then it hit her. Matt and Maggie called Steve over and he gave her a sedative (wonder what could be safe) off screen. Martha was lovely to Toni, as she is a widow, and the idea of naming Toni's child after Mike and her late father was discussed. Matt couldn't deal with losing Mike, and was in denial. Finally he fell apart three days or so (in show time/not real time) and allowed Maggie to comfort him.

Margo wants to get pregnant, but Alan doesn't realize that he may have already acted to bring a baby into the world. Margo found an apartment for her and Alan. It was under $250 a month, but she didn't share how they needed to purchase $5,000 worth of furniture as part of the deal. (That said within a short time, the furniture would be paid for and then the rent would be cheap.) On the day of the memorial, Margo was upset as she didn't want to go. She never met Mike, and it gave her flashbacks to when Margo believed that Alan was killed at as a POW. Margo was still somewhat jealous of Toni, but felt a baby would fix it. Alan was involved in Marty's surgery, but we didn't see it.

Hank and Lauri had planned to have Toni and Mike stand up for them at their wedding. Obviously since Mike is gone, that won't happen, they want to marry at the hospital chapel. (That place has bad memories for some, but guess Hank and Lauri have no idea.)

Carolee and Steve went to court off camera, we found out later that she is now Erich's legal mother as the adoption was approved. Unfortunately the plan to tell Erich was derailed when he talked about how his friend didn't have "real parents" as he was adopted. Later on, Billy found out what was going on, and decided he wanted to help. Carolee thought that wasn't Erich's job, but Steve felt this would be the best way.

Althea found out about Penny's predicament from a newspaper woman, who wanted the scoop. She was upset, but was calmed eventually. Penny was out on bail, using money from Nick, Matt, and Ann. Once Penny's father was reached off screen, Ann was given her money back. Lawyer Luke from Wyoming was being Penny's lawyer as Adam Reynolds wasn't available. Luke went and interviewed everyone, and both Penny and Althea felt he was against them, but he wanted to be prepared for anything. Toni and Penny had a good discussion after Mike's memorial, and Toni admitted that she kept quiet about certain things. Martha spilled the information. Sam also shared news about the movie, she saw with Penny. Cadman was on Penny's side, but the DA (who is very ambitious), got Cadman out of the way by sending him out to California on another case. Evil detective Roy (aka Earl Hindman, Bobby on Ryan's Hope and Wilson Wilson on Home Improvement) was taking over, which meant bad news for Penny. Nick spent most of the month helping Althea and Penny, ignoring Ann. That said he tried to be there for Matt (mainly off camera) and once was sweet to Toni, who is still working in the lab.

Those were the highlights of April 1974. There were no missing episodes, but it felt like there were since they didn't show everyone's reactions to Mike's "death" or his memorial. Obviously that was the lowlight of the month having all of that material left out of our on screens especially not being able to see Greta mourn her brother with her parents.
