On Days of Our Lives, Joey Johnson (James Lastovic) couldn't handle his guilt over Ava's (Tamara Braun) death over a year ago (March of 2016) and admitted to smothering her with a pillow. Below are my thoughts about this development.
Steve (Stephen Nichols) and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) were too settled and happy in their lives. Steve found information about his son Tripp (Lucas Adams), but Tripp's arrival wasn't smooth. He resented Steve for killing his mother, and the ISA not making him pay. The agency lied and said that Steve's actions were justified, which was completely ludicrous. Jade (Paige Searcy) wanting revenge on Kayla, made Tripp think that Kayla was responsible, and Steve was covering for her.
Tripp decided to hurt Kayla, by making her lose her job at the hospital. He didn't allow anyone to die, but made it look like Kayla was medically negligent after the fact. He acted as if he liked Kayla and wanted to become a physician also to get close enough to change the medical records. The hospital reinstated her, and Tripp was livid. He decided to go after her in a private room, she was resting in. Thankfully Steve found them before Tripp injured Kayla though she was willing to lie that she did the crime to protect her son. Then Joey walked in and blurted, he was Ava's murderer not his mother.
Joey turned himself in, and Roman (Josh Taylor) spoke about how Eric (Greg Vaughan) became a better person after going through his prison experience. Kayla was devastated that both her older brother, and husband supported Joey going to prison, but couldn't stop her son. Joey had spent months in therapy, but still couldn't cope with the lies. He said goodbye to his family with a small party at the pub.
This situation has been very difficult on Steve and Kayla's marriage, but it was appreciated that their conflict was based on actual differences of opinion and not infidelity. Most parents wouldn't be happy about their child being so broken, as all Joey did was trust the wrong person, and react with violence. This is in the Johnson genes in some ways, as he is certainly not the only person in the family who was pushed too far and committed a crime.
The last episode with James Lastovic's Joey aired on August 22, 2017. I'm glad the character was aged, but I felt they went too far in making him a murderer. After that point, he was on borrowed time, and I understand why he was written out. I feel for the actor, but sometimes this happens in soaps, a character does something wrong, they actually pay for the crime and their character arc comes to an end.
