Y&R Cane's Downfall

On "The Young and the Restless", we've been recently seeing Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard) jeopardize his marriage and future with Lily (Christel Khalil) due to Juliet (Laur Allen) below I discuss my mixed feelings about this situation.

I think it depends how one views the relationship between Lily and Cane on what ones reaction is.

Do I think Cane has been acting badly? Of course, but he isn't the only one at fault. Cane had sex with Juliet, when he obviously could not consent. If someone is so drunk, they don't recall what happened the next day, it was not consensual. (If the situation was reversed and Lily slept with someone else while in blackout mode, the audience would be screaming "rape", but since Cane is a guy that isn't happening.) Is Juliet to blame for all of Cane's behavior since this incident? My answer to that is no.

Cane lying about what happened with Juliet in Japan was wrong. If the story had been written as Cane tells Lily, he blacked out and didn't know what happened. And then together they find out what did occur, it would have had a very different tone.

Instead we get Cane lying, and then deciding to go after Billy (Jason Thompson) having everyone believe he was condoning gambling with the NHL causing Juliet to get fired and Lily's ad not to run. Juliet then lies about being sexually harassed, gets a lot of money. Cane loses his job, he gets blackmailed about the video that he had altered to hurt Billy unsuccessful, steals money from the kids and Lily tosses him out of the house. First off, Lily's family is rich, why would they have to worry about school, same with Cane's family. Anyway that was crazy, but whatever.

The thing is even though Cane is acting so awfully towards his family, and I think what happened between Cane and Juliet is problematic I'm watching this story with interest. That is why I have mixed feelings as I tend to dislike cheating stories, ambiguous rape stories, and illegitimate kid stories. (Some may say those are soap staples and you don't like them, why do you watch the genre, but that's a discussion for another day and post.)

At the end of it all, Cane is a lying jerk, which I can see upsetting people who ship Cane and Lily. The "cheating" can be waved off for the reasons I listed, but hurting the kids is one think that Lily won't stand. I hope at the end of this it is resolved in a way that makes sense, without making either character completely loathsome. I do feel for the kids, as regardless they are victims stuck in the middle of the adults' insane lives.
