Thoughts about "The Doctors" - May 1974

Another month's worth of episodes of "The Doctors" has aired on RetroTV. Below are my thoughts on what has aired for the month of May 1974.

Toni was coping, but had a lot of stress due to the loss of Mike. Her health took a bad turn, and she had to go on bed rest, which didn't help and she developed toxemia of pregnancy, which could lead to preeclampsia, convolutions, and potential death to her and her baby. She believes he will be a boy, and will be named Michael Paul. She had high blood pressure, edema (swelling bad enough that Alan had to take off her rings destroying the bands) and kidney issues. Everyone knows what is going on at this point, except Toni. (I wish they would have written this differently, as while Toni knows that Steve would be confiding in Carolee about pregnancy issues, now the entire Hope community knows what is going on, which is very ludicrous, and not how doctors are supposed to work due to confidentiality issues.) Hank and Lauri and everyone else are trying to help Toni.

Margo and Alan moved into their place, and she believes their marriage is in a good place. She continues to try to get pregnant without telling Alan what she is up to, though going to Steve for ovulation help may spell the end of it being a secret. (Again come on show..)

Nothing happened in regards to Erich being told about the adoption, as Carolee and Steve were more interested in discussing, Ann and Nick (wanting to have a destination wedding, which upset Carolee), Penny (overhearing her threaten John), Toni (due to her pregnancy) and Althea and Luke's love life. Billy wasn't shown in regards to what is going on with Toni, except he was sad for his sister and felt helpless over Mike's death. We did finally see Greta, but she hung out with Toni, though she didn't seem sad about Mike.

Luke tried to be a good lawyer for Penny, but Penny wouldn't tell him the truth. Dave came to town, wanting to get custody back of Penny, since Nick is technically her guardian. Eventually he had enough of what was going on and left Penny going back to the west coast. Luke seems to like Althea, and took her on a picnic alone. He sang "Sunshine on my Shoulder" to her, along with the radio. Luke seems overwhelmed by Penny's case, as well since Roy Griffin is doggedly pursuing information to help DA Otis prosecute Penny for murder.

Penny ran away again, but not for a logical reason like being scared about going to prison: she was upset about Nick and Ann's engagement, as they've finally set a tentative date. They've been together for months, but Penny has false hope that her mother and former stepfather will reconcile. Nick and Ann are going to wait to wed until after Penny is out of legal trouble. Instead of marrying in town, they'd return to the site on their engagement - Acapulco. Considering how Ann's parents died there, that isn't as romantic as one would think. Getting back to Penny, if the cops find out that Penny ran away, Nick, Matt/Maggie and Dave may be in some financial trouble. Once Dave returned from Asia, Ann got her money back on the bail.

Matt and Maggie had to deal with the stress of Toni's situation though they had time for her to exercise and recap. (That's a way way to have visual interest in a scene that gave us no new information.) The most interesting stuff with them was probably the dinner they shared with Greta and Toni off screen, which was frustrating as it has been way too long since we've seen a meal at the Powers house.

Those were the highlights of May 1974. There were no missing episodes, for a second consecutive month, which is great and hope that continues regularly. I'm also hoping that we meet Toni's baby soon, as we are about to start June, and the conception was in August 1973.
