Soap Opera Digest released news about "Days of Our Lives" today that the head writing team is changing again. Below are my thoughts about their news linked here.
Okay, Tom Langan and Chris Whitsell are out and Dena Higley is back with Josh Griffith who has written for many soaps in the past except Days of Our Lives. I'm not sure what I think about this, but since Days tapes so far in advance, it is likely we'll only see the changes in the autumn. I wonder what has been going on with the episodes, that they've been working on now to cause this change. If it had anything to do with what was airing currently, then we have at least five or six months worth of "questionable material". Hopefully it doesn't and we're not suffering with months of "lame duck" material. Of course, this is the one thing that I really dislike about Days is this problem of how long it takes to change direction.
Dena and Josh's material should be airing before Days' 50th anniversary, which hopefully means some cast returns. The one major criticism I can give about Langan and Whitsell is how certain areas of the canvas are missing. The show is lacking strong male characters with history that aren't villains, yes John Black is on more, but Brady, Daniel, and Eric aren't exactly "historical" lead characters with strong romantic pairings that have a large fan base. (No offense to any of them. Perhaps, at least one of the deadbeat supercouples will be fixed or at least revisited for the anniversary.)
Anyway, I'm not 100% sure what I feel about this change. It is wait and see and wait as we'll only know months from now.
