Days: Bo Leaves Town

On Tuesday, October 30, 2012, Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) left town with his mother Caroline (Peggy McKay) as she needs treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Peggy McKay isn't leaving Days of Our Lives, but Peter Reckell has, so this story was his write off from the series.

Bo discovered that something was wrong with his ma, as she was confusing his name eventually calling him Shawn, her late husband's name. Bo went to sister Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) who is a doctor and Caroline was given medical tests. Then Roman (Josh Taylor) being Caroline's other son was told. Since Bo quit the police force due to budget cuts, he was searching for something to do. Helping his mother became his goal, hence he is leaving town. We had a good amount of scenes with both Bo and Caroline saying goodbye. Kimberly, Caroline's older daughter, was also mentioned even though she hasn't been a regular character for many years.

What I appreciated in all of this was Bo's tie to John (Drake Hogestyn) and Marlena (Deidre Hall) was not forgotten. Caroline Brady was his only mother John ever knew, and I was stunned this was mentioned. Usually the years where John thought he was Roman Brady are ignored. Sami (Alison Sweeney) also had a final scene with her uncle Bo. Bo even said goodbye to Billie (Lisa Rinna), his former wife. It was odd, how Billie mentioned how Chelsea would have liked to see her Dad, but to Chelsea, who lives in Europe what is the big deal about her father going to California from Salem.

Bo leaves behind his wife Hope (Kristian Alfonso) and daughter Ciara (Lauren Boles). At this point, it seems like Days has forgotten rewritten that Hope and Bo aren't remarried, but I digress. The last scenes with Bo and Hope seemed to be more intense than the situation needed as they weren't breaking up, but considering the situation I can understand it. Before he left, Hope gave Bo all the information she could find on Stefano. He plans to look into it, while away, and perhaps this will be the excuse that is used when he doesn't return to Salem with Caroline.

Peter Reckell's departure was so open-ended that if someone doesn't keep up with what is going on with casting, it may take them time to realize Bo is no longer a character on Days. While I was glad that Bo's death wasn't faked, a write out like this seemed simple and not a tribute to the character. There were no montages of old clips, and it just seemed like a so long not a coda for someone who has been a major part of Days on and off since 1983.
