GH: Jason is "Dead"

On Monday's episode (October 22, 2012) of General Hospital, Jason (Steve Burton) "died". He was in a shootout with Joe Scully (Richard Steinmetz) and Duke or who we assume to be Duke (Ian Buchanan) then shot him. Jason went into the water after falling off the pier.

On Tuesday's show, Sam (Kelly Monaco) found out about the shooting. At the pier, she convinced the coast guard to allow her to dive to find Jason. When she came up from the water, she found Jason's phoenix, which ties into the phoenix/dragon wedding. Of course, in mythology the phoenix rises from the ashes to be born again.

As a viewer, I'm not sure what I think about this "death". While I appreciate ambiguity if only for the potential for the character to come back, I think it is disappointing that Jason didn't find out he was baby Danny's biological father. Having Jason accept the boy without believing he was the dad was fine, but I wish he knew before he passed.

At least Sam and Jason didn't finalize their divorce. Though I can see a story taking place where Sam moves on emotionally and falls for someone else. On her wedding day, Jason appears and obviously there will be no ceremony.

Hopefully if GH ends any time soon, Steve will agree to appear again for story closure. Regardless I hope the story about the fallout of the character's "demise" is filled with suspense, interest and doesn't forget all of Jason's loved ones whether they are part of the mob or the Quartermaine family.
