ABCFamily finally aired the season one finale of Switched at Birth on Monday, October 22, 2012. The 30 episode season began in June of 2011, with hiatuses tossed into the mix, and the new season will begin on Monday, January 7, 2013. (Originally season one was to be 32 episodes, but something changed.) Here are my thoughts on the last eight episodes.
The lawsuit that parents John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn Kennish (Lea Thompson) and Angelo (Gilles Marini) had against the hospital was one of the main stories. The season ended with us finding out the verdict. They had both won their cases, but the Kennishes got an award of a dollar, while Angelo was given millions. The cliffhanger was a pregnant woman played by General Hospital Alumni Annie Ilonzeh (Maya Ward) was looking for Angelo and ran into Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie LeClerc).
Angelo was only able to stay in the US because Regina (Constance Marie) had married him as he was in the country illegally. She couldn't let down their biological daughter Bay again and consented to this marriage of convenience. This upset Daphne as she hated the man who abandoned her, though by the end of the season she could tolerate him. Regina's relationship with Patrick (Christopher Wiehl) ended as he realized Regina had feelings for her "fake" husband. Regina and Daphne had another separation, as Regina hurt her wrist making it impossible for her to sign to her daughter. The strain of not being able to communicate as well hurt their bond.
Due to everything that had gone on both Bay and Daphne were rebelling. Bay was still dealing with her feelings of betrayal due to Emmett (Sean Berdy) sleeping with her former best friend Simone (Maiara Walsh). Regina was trying to help the girl, as she had an alcohol problem. Bay's relationship with Simone improved, though Toby (Lucas Grabeel) still couldn't stand his ex-girlfriend. Toby and Emmett's friendship was also fixed as they are now playing music together again.
Daphne was trying to get ahead with her career and with Kathryn's help got a job at a restaurant in a kitchen called Maize. The head chef Jeff (All My Children alumni Justin Bruening) at first didn't get along, but eventually they had feelings for one another. Jeff was way too old for teenager Daphne and Jeff even dated Emmett's mother Melody (Marlee Matlin). Jeff broke Daphne's heart after she quit her job for them to be together. In a nice bit of action, Daphne closed her eyes, so she couldn't see Jeff's words as he said goodbye to her. After hearing what happened between Jeff and Daphne, Angelo went to the restaurant and punched Jeff. Earlier in the season, Daphne also had another potential suitor in Travis (Ryan Lane) who also goes to Carlton. Travis was taken under John's wing, and finally John's sign language improved. Unlike Daphne, Travis cannot speak and doesn't have a supportive family like Emmett, so he's been isolated.
Bay became friends with a graffiti artist named Zarra (Tania Raymonde), she felt that if she had grew up with Regina (Constance Marie), that would have been her life. Zarra had a single mother and an absent father. Due to Bay being John's daughter, she was able to get them out of a crime. Unfortunately Zarra was out once with other friends, and got arrested. Bay went out of her way to help her friend enlisting Travis to borrow money from her dad. When John and Kathryn found out what she did, they believed she was stealing as she took hundreds of dollars to pay Zarra's bail. Eventually Bay moved out of the house and in with Zarra. After they were attacked and Toby brought her home, she ran away. The two girls decided to go to Mexico together to meet up with Zarra's father. Emmett, who refused to give up on Bay, helped John fetch Bay. Zarra left without saying goodbye as Emmett, Bay and John drove home.
Now that the lawsuit has been settled, I wonder what will be the next main story for the combined family. Will Regina and Daphne share in Angelo's newfound wealth? Will Bay finally forgive Emmett enough that they will get back together for good? Will Emmett and Toby be successful in their new musical venture? How will John and Kathryn deal now that they are out of the public eye? These are all plots I hope to be shown in season two.
