Derivative fiction more commonly called fan fiction or fanfic is something a good number of fans get involved in as part of their interest. Whether it is a coda to a prime time series episode, an imagined deleted scene that was referenced but never shown, or alternative universe story, all these things take creativity and time to explore.
The most well-known website is www.fanfiction.net . This site has been around for over a decade and includes stories based off of movies, television and book characters. There are also a lot of people who post their stories independently on message boards or blogs. Two examples are: Soap Opera Network has blogging off of their site's message board here and ONTV has original soap stories along with fan fiction on their message board.
I appreciate fan fiction though it must be said, one size does not fit all. Since fan fiction is a hobby, the quality does vary, though if one looks long enough they should find something they would like to read. Also just like with fan opinion, each writer has their own outlook towards the characters. This is why coding is so important, so people know ahead of time what pairings they will be reading about in a story. Another important thing is to get a beta reader if possible, having someone look over ones work before publishing is a good way to have better quality.
