Today was the last episode of the first half of Glee for the 2011-2012-television season. The next episode is scheduled for April 10. This entry covers only aired episodes, so if someone hasn’t seen all the episodes stop reading.
The main stories this season dealt with Santana’s (Naya Rivera) issues with being a lesbian, along with her finally public relationship with Brittany (Heather Morris). Santana came out to her family, but lost her grandmother in the process. Santana was outed after an argument with Finn (Corey Monteith) was heard in a hallway. A political opponent of both Burt (Mike O’Malley) and Sue (Jane Lynch) used it as part of a campaign ad. Burt ended up winning the election, while Brittany won student body president against Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Lea Michele). Rachel tried to rig the election for Kurt. Both Kurt and Rachel have been accepted to the next round of auditions for NYADA a musical theater academy. Blaine (Darren Criss) left Dalton and joined Kurt at McKinley. Sebastian (Grant Gustin), the new leader of the Warblers wanted Blaine, and tried to hurt Kurt in the process with a tainted slushie. Unfortunately Blaine was injured and needed surgery. Sebastian also went after Dave (Max Adler) and Dave was outed. He ended up trying to commit suicide. Thankfully he survived and even though Dave Karofsky and Kurt started badly they are now getting along.
West Side Story was the fall musical. Artie (Kevin McHale) was the director along with adults Shannon Bieste (Dot-Marie Jones) and Emma (Jayma Mays). Blaine ended up playing Tony to Rachel’s Maria. Santana played Anita, while Kurt played Officer Krupke. Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) started having story and even had a singing part in West Side Story. He and his girlfriend Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) performed together. Tina even got to sing at Sectionals, though she still wished for another solo. Mike’s college dream to dance was something Tina believed in, and she helped change his parents’ minds.
A rival Glee club was created when a new character named Sugar (Vanessa Lengies) was not allowed in the club. Mercedes (Amber Riley) because so frustrated with Will (Matt Morrison) as the head of Glee, that she joined Sugar. Eventually Santana and Brittany also joined the group named the Troubletones. Shelby (Idina Menzel) ended up being the coach as Sugar’s dad paid her a huge sum of money. She and Puck (Mark Salling) ended up having an affair, while Quinn (Dianna Agron) spiraled out of control. Quinn tried to prove Shelby was an unfit mother, and Puck sided with Shelby. He fell in love with her and wanted to be a family with Shelby and Beth (as Shelby is raising his daughter with Quinn). Once the relationship came out, Shelby left the school. At sectionals the Troubletones and New Directions competed with New Directions winning. The gang let the girls back into the group.
Sam (Chord Overstreet) came back to McKinley after leaving town with his family. He was discovered stripping, and is currently living with Kurt, Finn and their family. Sam and Mercedes had a relationship over the summer, and didn’t fall out of love. Mercedes cheated on her new boyfriend Shane (LaMarcus Tinker) with Sam. She ended her relationship with both guys, as she hated herself for being a cheat.
Will asked Emma to marry him, after they started to deal with her OCD. She’s in therapy for her problem, and hopes that someday they will have a family. After Dave nearly died, Will admitted to the glee club that in high school he had suicidal thoughts. Emma also got tenure over Sue and Will. Shannon Bieste fought with Sue over a man named Cooter and then married him. Sue is now pregnant using a donor and the father is unknown.
We finally met Rachel’s dads played by Jeff Goldblum and Brian Stokes Mitchell. They along with Burt and Carole (Romy Rosemont) wanted to stop Finn and Rachel from getting married at such a young age. Finn had to deal with the news that his father was dishonorably discharged from the military and had a drug problem.
The three of the four Glee Project winners appeared this season. Samuel Larsen played Joe, who was a new member of the God Squad along with Sam, Quinn, and Mercedes. Damian McGinty played Rory, who is a new member of New Directions. He tried to seduce Brittany and then got Sugar to date him over Artie by lying about having to go back to Ireland. Lindsay Pearce played Harmony, and she was a member of a rival glee club.
The season ended after New Directions beat Dalton Academy at regionals. After their win, Finn and Rachel along with the others went to get married by a justice of the peace. Everyone was there except Quinn. She was running late, and the cliffhanger was Quinn being sideswiped. Before this happened, Quinn had finally gotten her life back. She was back on the Cheerios, made peace with her past and gotten into Yale.
Those are the highlights of the first half of season three of Glee. I’m hoping that the fallout from the near wedding and Quinn’s accident is dealt with sensitivity and heart.
