GL: Reva Five Episode DVD and a Valentine's Freebie

On Friday, February 10, 2012, Soapclassics.com released a new DVD for sale featuring the character of Reva Shayne (Kim Zimmer). They’ve also posted a free episode from February 1984 (episode number 9397) featuring a party at the Lakeland Country Club, which I’ve summarized.

Warning: this summary is not in exact sequence as it is a party and characters move around. I tried to keep the stories together as I felt that was the most important thing. This episode has the “My Guiding Light opening” with the party where Vanessa and Nola wear the same dress.

The episode begins with an instrumental of the song Cabaret from Cabaret. Alan (Chris Bernau) and Vanessa (Maeve Kinkead) are hosting a masquerade party, and everyone is wearing masks. Reva, Josh (Robert Newman) and HB (Larry Gates) go to the event together as do Henry (William Roerick), Quint (Michael Tylo) and Nola (Lisa Brown), and Trish (Rebecca Hollen) and Ross (Jerry verDorn). Nola is pregnant with Anthony James, though the audience wouldn’t know the fetus’ name yet. Bea (Lee Lawson) and Floyd (Tom Nielsen) go to the event together.

Tony (Greg Beecroft) and Annabelle (Harley Jane Kozak) argue and then Dr. John Stevens (Michael Woods) comes to her with unfinished business. John is really Jim Reardon, and I will call him Jim for the rest of this entry. Tony is not feeling well, and Floyd wants to help him. Jim and Hillary (Marsha Clark) are dating. Mindy (Krista Teserau) and Rick (Michael O’Leary) are kissing and that fades to Beth (Judi Evans) and Phillip (Grant Aleksander) smooching. Phillip and Beth are kissing outside on the patio, while Bradley (James Rebhorn) lurks. We see the back of someone’s head it is Alex (Beverlee McKinsey), but the audience at the time may not have known that as she was new to town. She and Vanessa speak, but Vanessa has no idea that it is the baroness.

Billy (Jordan Clarke) is at the party with Lucy from Tulsa. Mindy is thrilled to share the news with Billy that she and Rick are in love. HB and Henry argue about Billy and Vanessa. Josh gets upset with them and mentions how they are best friends and shouldn’t be acting that way. Vanessa becomes upset about Billy and Lucy.

Phillip makes an announcement in front of everyone and tells everyone that he proposed and Beth said yes. The wedding is scheduled for March 16, which is also Beth’s birthday. Phillip and Beth ask Rick and Mindy to be their best man and maid of honor respectively. Lillian (Tina Sloan) is happy for them, but wants Beth to move back in with her for the three or so weeks before the wedding. Beth has yet to tell her mother about how Bradley raped her. Alan is upset with Phillip for sharing that news at the party. Out of the corner of his eye, Alan sees Bradley Raines. Henry finds Alan outside and asks why he went outside. Alan asks Henry if Vanessa would marry him. Alan doesn’t love Vanessa, but respects her.

Early in the party, Alan and Ross have words, as Alan is surprised Ross would show up after the bad blood between them. Ross felt like he should come just because he wants to get something on Alan’s dime. Trish stops Ross from telling Phillip what Alan did. Trish tries to tell Ross that he should make the best of things at LTA, though that is not Ross’s dream. This is obviously after Alan framed Ross with drugs and a hooker to get him out of public service. Ross is drinking too much, as he mentions watered down drinks to Trish. She leaves and Alex comes up to him and asks him to dance. While dancing, Alex mentions how Ross doesn’t like Alan, which he doesn’t deny. They both chuckle about that. Later Phillip and Ross do talk, and Ross gives extremely awful advice of not listening to advice as he is toasted.

Quint and Nola speak about Stacy’s health issues as Nola wonders if she will ever be able to hear and dance. After he leaves, Nola sees someone familiar on the dance floor it is Jim, her brother. Jim sees Nola and says her name. Jim brings Hillary outside the ballroom and Quint comes in they talk about the jewelry. This necklace is the key to curing dreaming death. Ed and Maureen are supposed to be at the party as Bea looks for them, but they aren’t seen. When Hillary finally gets to talk to Jim, she asks about his relationship with Ed and Maureen. Jim tells her that he is an old friend of Maureen’s, but Ed thinks they are having an affair. Jim assures Hillary he is not sleeping with Maureen, and of course he isn’t as that would be incest as Maureen is his sister.

Lujack (Vincent Irizarry) is donning a tuxedo & mask comes in about a car being blocked late in the episode. Obviously he is not a guest at the party. Lujack comes up to Beth and asks her to dance. Lujack thinks that Beth is with that pinball wizard Rick Bauer, but she says she is with Phillip. He doesn’t understand why she would be with that preppy and Beth says because she loves him. Phillip and Ross come back in and Phillip goes off on Lujack for dancing with Beth.

Vanessa goes to the powder room and Reva comes in after her to speak about Billy. Reva tells Vanessa to go after Billy while she still has a chance. Lucy, Billy’s date walks in and she calls him William. Reva realizes Lucille was Lucy from high school, a daughter of a politico in Oklahoma who made it with the football team. Reva and Vanessa team up and tie up Lucy in her bright pink boa. They push her into the closet in the ladies room. Lucy is knocking and kicking on the door, while Vanessa and Reva celebrate. Reva tries to do a high five, which Vanessa is not sure about, but then she slaps Reva back extremely hard.

Tony goes off on Annabelle telling her there is nothing wrong with him, but he starts to falter. She wants to know and wants to help him whatever it is. He doesn’t want to tell her to put her through this as he announced that he is dying the episode goes to closing credits.

This episode has the “My Guiding Light opening” with the party where Vanessa and Nola wear the same dress. Unfortunately it is just a logo ending and not a full list. Pam Long is the head writer and John P. Whitsell II directed the episode. Gail Kobe was the executive producer. This has a medium sized credit sheet with a lot of the crew listed, but not the cast.

I thought this episode was a good watch, and wasn’t even really a Reva episode. A lot of characters were featured at this party as one could tell from reading my summary. My copy of the Reva DVD is on order. I plan on writing about the first three episodes from 1983 (her first day), 1984 (the continuation of the “slut of Springfield” scenes), and 1990 when Reva went over the bridge. The 2004 and 2006 are summarized around the web, so I’ll look for the best summary I can find it link to it for ease of use.
