On the November 23, 2011 Thanksgiving holiday episode Matthew Buchanan (Eddie Alderson) narrated the show, while he was comatose. At the end of the episode, he flat lined, but the following Monday he awoke from his coma.
Obviously everyone who found out that Matthew was awake were overjoyed. His parents Bo (Robert S. Woods) and mother Nora (Hillary Bailey Smith) rejoiced. Destiny (Shenell Edmonds) felt the need to see Matthew and was happily surprised he was awake. They had a lot to talk about, but Nora and Bo wanted her to keep her mouth shut until Matthew was awake longer. Bo went to make phone calls off screen, though we saw the reactions on screen to the news by the people at Llanfair like Viki, Clint and Natalie.
Matthew thought Destiny was pregnant, but Nora lied that she had just gotten fat. When the fetus moved, Matthew realized that she was with child. Matthew thought she got back together with her former boyfriend Darren, and was surprised to find out he was going to be a father.
Destiny explained to Matthew how his mother Nora convinced her to not terminate the pregnancy. Matthew berated his mom, but she shot back that they shouldn’t have had sex, if they couldn’t deal with the consequences. The situation between Matthew and Nora was tense, as it had been for the last few months before Matthew’s accident. Nate hit him; he hit his head, and got a serious brain trauma. The trauma kept Matthew in a coma since late winter.
The scenes ended with Matthew uncertain about what he wanted to do in regards to the upcoming birth of their child. Destiny wanted the baby to know who they were, but didn’t expect him to change his life. That said Matthew has a lot to catch up with as he missed months of school. Everything from college choice is up in the air for Destiny and Matt and the baby will influence all of their plans for the rest of his life. After Nora left, Matthew told Destiny that there was one thing he knew for sure, and held Destiny’s hand. It seems that the one time Matthew and Destiny had sex meant something for both of them. While they didn’t plan on having a child, they do want to be a couple.
