ATWT: Christmas in Oakdale

In this entry, I am going to write about my thoughts on the Christmas in Oakdale soapclassics.com As the World Turns release. All episodes on this release have full opening and closing credits, some of which were holiday style with special cast photos.

Episode One: December 24, 1985

In this episode, Frannie (Julianne Moore) is celebrating her birthday. There will be an open house that evening for her special day. Frannie was there with Doug (John Wesley Shipp) who was stalking Kim (Kathryn Hays) and murdered two women. He had just attacked Marsha, while Kevin (Steven Weber) was in jail. Kevin was freed and he and Jay (Breck Jamison) decided to team up to find out whom was accusing them of being criminals. Harriet was with Shannon (Margaret Reed) and Brian (Mark Pinter) helping people. Harriet gave Shanon a wonderful gift, old Walsh stock. Barbara (Colleen Zenk) came with Paul to help out too. Shannon gave Brian gloves, while Brian gave her a jack-in-a-box with a bracelet around it. Brian and Barbara had kissed, as Shannon saw lipstick, but it meant nothing to Brian. Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard) spent some of her holiday alone. She felt guilty when she saw Lily’s present of a necklace that said number one mom as she was lying about Lily’s parentage. She was also keeping it a secret that Sierra (Finn Carter) was her daughter. Once she realized John (Larry Bryggman) wanted to date Sierra, Craig (Scott Bryce) looked like a much better romantic option. Lyla (Anna Sward) even told John that she realized he liked Sierra as he shaved his mustache. Oddly enough Lisa (Eileen Fulton) received the same Christmas card from John as Kim got from her stalker. Andy (Scott DeFreitas) got numerous hockey sticks for Christmas and there was a joke he could become a shepard when he got older if hockey didn’t work out as a career. Margo (Hillary Bailey Smith) was running late, so Tom (Gregg Marx) came by himself. Dusty gave Lily (Martha Byrne) a kitten figurine like her cat Ma’am, while Holden (Jon Hensley) watched. Betsy (Linsday Frost), Steve (Frank Runyeon) and their daughter Dani came to drop off a present with Iva (Lisa Brown). Holden gave the kitten he whittled for Lily to Dani instead. The majority of the Hughes family that live in Oakdale was together as Chris (Don McLaughlin) and Nancy (Helen Wagner) watched their children and grandchildren. At the end of the episode, everyone sang a holiday carol along with Happy Birthday to Frannie.

Episode Two: December 24, 1992

This episode focused on two stories: Margo (Ellen Dolan) waiting to hear about whether or not she was HIV Positive, and Lily (Heather Rattray) dealing with feeling betrayed and Holden having amnesia. At Tom (Scott Holmes) and Margo’s house, Dawn and her son Jerry (later he was called Jeremy) attended and it was explained how she had been raped by the same man as Margo. Jessica (Tamara Tunie) and Duncan (Michael Swan) were there and she was pregnant with the child who grew up to be Bonnie. Happily, Margo got a phone call telling her that didn’t have the virus. Holden was dealing with his first Christmas at home as he didn’t remember his past. The day before Holden asked Lily for a divorce. What was interesting was that even without his memory Holden was good at finding a Christmas tree. Iva, Caleb (Michael David Morrison) and Julie (Susan Marie Snyder) would have left the farm if Lily wanted to go for Christmas. When Lucinda called the farm, Caleb yelled at her. Lily had been lied to about Holden and also about Julie’s pregnancy with Aaron. Iva adopted Aaron who was Julie and Holden’s son. She didn’t want to be around her family, so she was staying with Angel (Alice Haining), and at the end of the episode she was on a plane out of town. Also Frannie (Mary Ellen Stuart) and Seth (Steve Basset) share the same birthday and said goodbye to each other as she planned to go to Montega with her half-sister Sabrina (Claire Beckman). Frannie’s ex-Daryl gave her one last gift a private flight for her and Sabrina. Scott (Joseph Breen) finally called Lisa mom at the Hughes family Christmas. Royce (Terry Lester) and Emily (Kelley Menighan) were happy and together. Her mother Susan (Marie Masters) and stepfather Larry (Ed Fry) came to celebrate as did Ellen (Patricia Bruder). They had extra toys, so Susan and Larry dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus to entertain the children. Royce made a phone call about how he can’t spend Christmas with someone, but he loved them. Neal Alcott (Mary Kay Adams) was with Lucinda for the holiday. (Various other characters were on this episode that did not appear on other disks like Evan, Ned, Debbie and Linc.

Episode Three: December 25, 1995

In this episode, everyone seemed to be happy. For Christmas, Lucinda’s family was with her: her daughter Lily (Martha Byrne), her husband Damian (Paolo Seganti), their baby son Luke, her sister Sam (Brooke Alexander) and her husband Kirk (Tom Wiggin). Mike (Shawn Christian) and Mark (Alexander Walters) were together for the holiday they were not getting along. Andy came by to give them a present (a train set) from Mike and Mark’s sister. Scott (Doug Wert) invited Roseanna (Yvonne Perry) to go with him to Tom and Margo’s place. Tom went to bring Carly (Maura West), but had to change his plans once he found out Roseanna was already at the party. Jeremy, who Tom and Margo now considered their child as his mother Dawn had died, decided to go away to boarding school. A grown-up Dani (Jordana Brewster) was upset that Jeremy wanted to leave. The kids, Hal (Benjamin Hendrickson) and Barbara were at Tom and Margo’s along with Lisa, Bob, Jessica (JoAnna Rheinhart) Dan and Nancy.

Episode Four: December 26, 2000

This episode focused on two different celebrations. Lyla was home for the holidays, and was going to help Craig (Hunt Block), Margo and Tom deal with Katie’s (Terri Conn) green card marriage to Simon (Paul Leyden). They even drew up papers for an annulment, which Katie ripped up, and Craig paid them for their time. The money is the reason they both went to the house. Lyla wanted to help Katie, but just alienated her youngest. Another family member came to visit as Penny (Rosemary Prinz) came to see her mother Nancy and brother Bob. Chris (Paul Korver) set up a dinner for Nancy, Bob, Kim and Lisa as they all know and love Penny. Emily helped her get to Oakdale. Penny wanted her to stay as since she is Daniel’s mother, she is a part of the family. Otherwise, we see Holden coming for Christmas for Lucinda's sake even though Lily wants to be with Simon. She and Simon talk on the phone. Rose tells little Luke that she will be a good aunt to him. Also Denise (Casandra Creech) spent the holiday with her daughter, Isaac and Ben.

Episode Five: December 21, 2007

This episode was a high concept one based on a dollhouse. The characters of Oakdale had variations of their storylines told in the guise of dolls. Hope (Ashley Greiner) first sees the dollhouse while out with her grandmother Lucinda and younger sister Natalie. The story then shifts to what seems to be Victorian times. Lily is engaged to Dusty (Grayson McCouch), but really wants Holden, while Dusty wants Emily. Chris (Dylan Bruce) is Emily’s fiancĂ©, but Dusty owes him money. Luke (Van Hansis) and Noah (Jake Silbermann) speak in hushed tones about their past. At the end of this, the man next to the Lily doll changed.

Roseanna (Cady McClain) comes across the dollhouse in the window and travels back in time. She is married to Paul (Roger Howarth) while Craig (Scott Bryce) is her doctor. Roseanna is aware of Meg (Marie Wilson) and Paul having an affair, but Craig tells her that her heart is getting stronger. Craig then blackmails Meg into leaving town.

Parker, J.J. and Sage go to the store window. Brad (Austin Peck) and Katie interact, and she is introduced to Jack (Michael Park) who has just returned from military service. Carly comes with her children, and she and Jack share love at first sight. Henry (Trent Dawson) begins to propose to Vienna (Ewa DeCruz), but Lisa’s necklace goes missing. She blames Carly, but Vienna finds it.

Gwen (Jennifer Landon) and Will (Jesse Sofer) see the dollhouse. They are transported into the other reality, and find a baby outside their home. It ends up that child is really theirs, as people had lied to them. Alison was a good supportive friend, while Aaron and Sofie faked being the child’s parents. They find out that Barbara was trying to swindle them and a necklace helped proved the baby's heritage. Once Susan comes in and tells them what is going on, Gwen and Will are thrilled to be reunited with their child.

At the end doll Tom asks Margo to marry him, and Bob gives a toast. Also doll Carly winks at Sage.

That’s my summary of the Christmas in Oakdale ATWT disc. I liked how a good number of performers that did not appear in the first set showed up here. Such episodes tend to have large casts, there were a lot of different people to enjoy.
