Y&R: The Backwards Episode

My television listing referenced “The Young & the Restless” that aired on December 9, 2011 as the backwards episode. It was kind of confusing, but these are my thoughts on it, if you haven’t seen it read no further.

This episode had a shocking start, as Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and Deacon (Sean Kanan) were at the altar and pronounced husband and wife. As the show unfolded, we were shown why Nikki would marry him. Deacon held the fates of her family over her head. If she didn’t marry him, he would go to the police and implicate her daughter Victoria (Amelia Henlie) and her former husband Victor (Eric Braeden) in the murder of Diane (Maura West). At the end of the episode, Sharon (Sharon Case) shows Victor the wedding photo and he is really upset. It is also discovered that Victor’s fingerprints were on something at the scene of the crime. Like everyone else who finds out about the marriage, Nikki isn’t happy, but she felt she had no choice.

Meanwhile, Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and Ricky (Peter Porte) worked together to hurt Restless Style. Billy (Billy Miller) had not given him the position he wanted at the magazine, and with Phyllis’ help got revenge. Phyllis knew the passwords, and Ricky posted a story about Nikki being a potential suspect. This story upset Victoria and Billy vowed to post a retraction. Of course, once something is out there (like someone being a potential murderer), it can’t really disappear.

Nick (Josh Morrow) confronted Sharon for going to Adam (Michael Muhney). Sharon is trying to trap Adam and convince him to not implicate Victor in Diane’s murder. Avery (Jessica Collins) is frustrated by Nick’s actions and doesn’t want to be his third choice, as he hasn’t gotten over either of Sharon or her sister Phyllis. Nick kissed her to show that he wants to be with her.

In the past, I’ve watched episodes of other programs that were told out of sequence. Sometimes it works really well, this was middle of the road for me. This is a style I prefer in action adventure genre, where the main character is in peril, and then you see how they got into the extreme situation. Perhaps we were supposed to see Nikki as the person in peril. I was surprised that Y&R would make a stunt episode and air it on a Friday in December.
