Thoughts on the Premiere of Dirty Soap

Last night E! aired the first episode of the soap opera reality show, Dirty Soap. The program was on from 10-11 pm in the east. Here are my thoughts on it.

Dirty Soap focused on the lives of current and former soap opera performers. The west coast cast featured Nadia Bjorlin from Days of Our Lives, who just finished her stint as Chloe Lane, her boyfriend Brandon Beemer who plays Owen from The Bold & The Beautiful (and used to be on Days as Shawn), Galen Gering (Rafe on Days, used to be Luis on Passions), Galen’s wife Jenna (who isn’t currently acting), Kirsten Storms (Maxie on General Hospital, who used to be on Days as Belle and known to non-soap viewers as Zenon from the Disney Channel) and Kelly Monaco (Sam on GH and in the past was Livvie on Port Charles and won the first season of Dancing with the Stars). On the east coast, they focused on Farah Fath and John-Paul Lavosier otherwise known as Gigi and Rex on One Life to Live. Farah’s first soap job was as Mimi on Days, and she and Kirsten used to be best friends. Obviously the end of their friendship will be touched upon on this show.

They followed Nadia on her last day of work at Days. We saw her in hair and make-up, in her dressing room and on set. Brandon was sweet to send her flowers on her last day. We also saw her at a movie premiere, where Brandon was clearly ignored, along with them getting ready for her going away party. The party wasn’t at the Days set. Brandon, Farah and Molly Burnett (Melanie) gave speeches. We also saw in the background Dot-Marie Jones from Glee, Christian LeBlanc from Y&R and Ron Moss from B&B. Galen and Jenna were also there, and Jenna seemed jealous of how social Galen was and how he spoke with Molly. We saw Galen and Jenna at home with their kids. She seems frustrated over him kissing for work. While I can understand her not wanting to watch it, unless you are a child actor kissing is part of the job.

While hanging out with Nadia, Farah made a comment how at OLTL she didn’t get a party, but truly unless you or a cast member sets it up you aren’t going to get one. (Perhaps Nadia’s party was set up by the producers’ of Dirty Soap to get footage and I did want to see more of the party especially as I was wondering who Ron Moss was kissing during the speeches.) Days used to have goodbye parties for actors, but most other soaps never did that. Most of the time, parties are only held on set for show anniversaries and long-time cast members hitting milestones like Erika Slezak reaching 40 years straight on One Life to Live.

The cameras went with Kelly to her fan event. The people there loved her obviously. Primarily Kelly and Kirsten hung out and talked about Kelly’s former boyfriend Mike. That ended with Kirsten convincing Kelly to burn her 90s era prom dress. While watching this I wondered why neither of them thought about donating it along with some other items.

Farah and JP were in California, as they plan to move there after OLTL wraps. He didn’t like the house they looked at, as it had no screens. They also saw a fan that took a picture. At least the viewer was nice enough not to interrupt their meal, but Farah snarked about her leggings. It looked like the viewer knew him and not her, though. JP is still taping regularly, and seems to be against LA. JP most likely would have been a lifer in the NYC soap scene, if that were a possibility from how he was acting. Before they left New York, we saw his DeLorean, and how he was wearing pajama pants driving it. We met Farah’s gay pals, who were helping her deal with stuff in NYC including purses.

I hope while watching this show we get to know more about the personalities of the actors and their quirks. While I enjoy drama, I also appreciate the funny on celebrity based reality shows. As an audience member, I want to see that the actors (or musicians or whomever) are people too, that they can laugh at themselves and not take things too seriously. I also hope we get to see more cameos from other soap opera performers during the show's six episode run.
