Last night, MTV aired the final two episodes of season one of Awkward. The program is a 30 minute serialized teen comedy, which is coming back for a second season in 2012. Here are my thoughts on how the show advanced since my first post on it after the airing of episode three. This entry has information through the last episode of the season, so if you haven’t seen it yet read no further.
Jenna Hamilton has a crazy life as a 15 (now 16 year-old) high school sophomore. The story began after the character received a note telling her how she needed to change her life. Jenna accidentally hurt herself and everyone assumed it was a suicide attempt. Due to this situation, she had to spend time with a guidance counselor named Valerie. Valerie isn’t the type of person who should be giving advice. (She makes Glee’s Emma look overqualified.) For whatever reason, Valerie treats Jenna like her best girlfriend instead of a teacher. For example, on Jenna’s birthday she brought a cake to the cafeteria and made everyone sing to Jenna. As a gift, Valerie bought Jenna a copy of Sixteen Candles, which was actually a thoughtful gift once Jenna saw the movie as obviously the generation gap was in full force and it wasn’t something Jenna would have known.
At school, Jenna has two best friends Tamara and Ming. Tamara wants to rise in social status, and is a member of the band. Ming is Asian, who a crazy mother who doesn’t let her do anything. She was allowed to go to the Winter Formal, but had to go with another girl. Her rival is Sadie, who hates Jenna. She embarrasses Jenna. Two of these instances were throwing a drink at her at a football game, and stealing her guidance counselor file, which included the letter which told Jenna she was a loser. The program has a love triangle (quad) among Lissa (Sadie’s best friend), Jake (Lissa’s boyfriend who has developed feelings for Jenna), Matty (the guy Jenna likes and lost her virginity to) and Jenna. Jake and Lissa broke up because he kissed Jenna and told her. Lissa tried to hold on to Jake, but he finally had enough and dumped her. What also complicates things is that Jake and Matty are best friends. Matty likes Jenna, but doesn’t feel comfortable having a girlfriend in public. He allowed her to meet his relatives, but wouldn’t tell anyone they were together. Matty even spent time at Jenna’s house with Ming and Tamara.
Jenna is an only child to people who had her while they were in high school. Her father is rather sweet, while her mother is trying to relive her teen years through Jenna. On the night of the bonfire, they got high while waiting to pick up their daughter. Her mother’s best friend calls her “little bitch”, and drugged Jenna, on the night they had a house party. While Jenna was drugged she kissed the guy Tamara was seeing. This nearly destroyed their friendship, though they did make up eventually.
The last hour had Jenna making a decision over which guy to choose, and who wrote the letter. After Matty didn’t ask her to formal, she decided to go with Jake, who did. Matty came over to her house, and left a note to her. He then went to the event to talk to Jenna. He told Jenna and Jake how he felt, without saying it was Jenna. Her heart wanted Matty, but her brain wanted Jake. She chose Jake because unlike with Matty, Jake would hold her hand. Jenna and Jake kissed, but she wants to move slowly and considering what happened with Matty that is understandable. After Jake left, Jenna found out that her mother was the one who wrote the fateful note.
The end of the final two episodes had the cast out of character saying thanks to the audience for watching and sharing the show with friends. Since Jenna has made a decision about her love life, will she be able to stick with Jake? Also how will Jake react if he finds out about Matty and Jenna? On top of that, Jenna needs to deal with her mother’s betrayal. All in all the first season of Awkward. was a lot of fun, and I look forward to more episodes of the program.
