Thoughts on Daytime Emmy Nominations 2016

On Thursday, March 31, 2016 Emmy Online posted the 43rd annual Daytime Emmy nominations. The winners again will be decided based on who got the most votes during this round. Below is the list and my thoughts on those who were included this year.

The announcement occurred on "The Talk" like last year. The hosts of the show were thrilled when they were nominated for Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment and as hosts for that genre. All four current daytime dramas ("The Bold and the Beautiful", "Days of Our Lives", "General Hospital", and "The Young and the Restless") were nominated for best show. Only some awards were mentioned on the show, while others I found out online. For the non-acting categories, all four shows were included in directing, casting and music. Days was omitted in writing, but if you look at the list a lot of the tech awards had at least if not all four as nominees. Each show at least one song nominated with B&B having two. GH's song was "Dreams", Y&R's was "The Gray", B&B had both "Lost in Time" and "Love's Masterpiece" and Days had "The Time". Interestingly (at least to me) Bradley Bell is listed as a lyricist on the B&B songs. I wonder what he did in regards to those words specifically.  Also the Days and Y&R teams are against Odd Squad on PBS for stunt coordination. Including nominations for behind the scenes employees, each show had the following total nominations:

  • Y&R - 27 (last year they had 25)
  • GH - 24 (last year they had 28)
  • B&B - 23 (last year they had 19)
  • Days - 16 (last year they had the same)

For the web soaps, the following shows were nominated. The Bay The Series, East Los High, EastSiders, Vanity, and Winterthorne. East Los High is via Hulu and Vanity was sponsored by Maybelline and on Youtube, the others should be familiar to soap fans due to their casts including industry performers. This year the performances in the digital daytime drama series were split into male and female categories with many famous names. For actress: Mary Beth Evans from The Bay, Kathleen Gati from Winterthorne, Elizabeth Hubbard from Anacostia, Lilly Melgar from The Bay, and Patsy Pease from The Bay were nominated. For actor: Kristos Andrews from The Bay, Van Hansis from EastSiders, Rick Hearst from Youthful Daze, JD Pardo from East Los High, and Kevin Spirtas from Winterthorne were nominated.

Game shows nominated were Jeopardy!, Let's Make a Deal, Monopoly Millionaires' Club, The Price is Right, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire. For game show host: Craig Ferguson (Celebrity Name Game), Steve Harvey (Family Feud), Wayne Brady (LMAD), Billy Gardell (MMC), Brooke Burns (The Chase) were nominated. It is surprising to see five game shows and hosts nominated as that hasn't happened in some time. And again it isn't a perfect match. I was most surprised about the lottery show Monopoly Millionaires' Club being nominated as that is a weekly syndicated program, which has been cancelled. This was mentioned on "The Talk" as the legal courtroom category, morning program, and many talk shows were listed including things like best musical performance in daytime, which could be anything that wasn't in prime time or late night.

Getting back to soaps and the acting nominations, which this year had five people per category unlike last year with four in most except for five in Lead Actress.

Lead Actress

Tracey Bregman (Lauren, Y&R)
Kassie DePaiva (Eve, Days)
Mary Beth Evans (Kayla, Days)
Finola Hughes (Anna, GH)
Maura West (Ava/Denise, GH)

Last year's winner Maura West as Ava Jerome on GH is nominated and no one else who was nominated in this category in 2015 has been included though Finola was in supporting last year. B&B had no one in this category at the pre-nomination stage. We could have a first time winner if either Kassie or Mary Beth would win, which would be interesting. I actually think that is kind of different as we tend to get a lot of performers who get nominated in lead on a yearly basis.

Lead Actor

Tyler Christopher (Nikolas, GH)
Anthony Geary (Luke, GH)
Justin Hartley (Adam, Y&R)
Christian LeBlanc (Michael, Y&R)
Kristoff St. John (Neil, Y&R)

Last year's winner Tony Geary (Luke on GH) is listed in his last year of eligibility as he has left the program. We had four nominees in this category in 2015, and LeBlanc was the only other person who was included though Kristoff was in supporting. ASFAIK Justin and Tyler have never been in this category before.

Supporting Actress

Lauralee Bell (Christine, Y&R)
Jessica Collins (Avery, Y&R)
Linsey Godfrey (Caroline, B&B)
Peggy McKay (Caroline, Days)
Melissa Reeves (Jennifer, Days)

Last year's winner Amelia Heinle isn't on the list again, though she won two in a row. GH had no one in this category at the pre-nomination level. Linsey is the only one who was nominated in supporting last year, and Peggy McKay was in lead in 2015. It is nice to see a list when we can have a new daytime winner.

Supporting Actor

Sean Blakemore (Shawn, GH)
Steve Burton (Dylan, Y&R)
Bryton James (Devon, Y&R)
Jacob Young (Rick, B&B)
Dominic Zamprogna (Dante, GH)

Last year's winner Chad Duell (Michael on GH) is not listed. Only Jacob was nominated in this category last year. Steve, Bryton, and Jacob all have Emmys, but either they weren't in this category or they were for a previous part.

Younger Actress

Reign Edwards (Nicole, B&B)
Hunter King (Summer, Y&R)
True O'Brien (Paige, Days)
Ashlyn Pearce (Aly, B&B)
Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma, GH)

Last year's winner (her second in a row) Hunter King is pre-nominated again, will she get a third golden statuette? Out of this list, only Reign and Hunter are still regular cast members of their respective shows. Paige and Aly were both killed off so True and Ashlyn have moved on, and Brooklyn's character (the only child in the category) moved out of town with her parents.

Younger Actor

Nicolas Bechtel (Spencer, GH)
Bryan Craig (Morgan, GH)
Max Ehrich (Fen, Y&R)
Pierson Fodé (Thomas, B&B)
Tequan Richmond (TJ, GH)

Last year's winner was Freddie Smith (Sonny from Days) and he wasn't on the ballot. Bryan, Max and Tequan were all nominated last year. Nicolas is the only child actor, and he's currently on a Disney Channel show, so this may be the only time he'll get a younger actor nomination in the foreseeable future.

The Outstanding Guest Performer in a Daytime Drama category had a new group of nominees as due to eligibility issues you can't be a regular. This is a tough competition and I wonder if we will have a three-way tie like last year. Anna and Obba are now semi-regulars on B&B with the others being short-term characters.

Anna Maria Horsford (Vivenne, B&B)
Obba Babatundé (Julius, B&B)
Adam Leadbeater (Dr. Malcolm, B&B)
Dee Wallace (Patricia, GH)
Frank Runyeon (Angel, Y&R)

Congrats to all the nominees. Unfortunately the show won't be on television this year as the two-year deal with Pop didn't get renewed after the first year.  The awards will be during the weekend of April 29th. The technical awards will be given out on the 29th with the main categories being on May 1st. There is no information yet about if the show will stream or who will get the lifetime achievement award.
