My favorite show on ABCFamily, Switched at Birth is coming back on Monday, September 3, 2012 aka Labor Day. Before the new episode airs at 8 PM ET, they are reshowing older episodes. Before the new episodes air, I wanted to write up my feelings about what aired during its last run in January - March, 2012.
Unlike most shows Switched at Birth has been split into three segments, this is a peculiarity with ABCFamily. Instead of this being season two, they just renewed and added additional episodes. There will be 32 episodes in season one, 10 will be airing in the coming months. Season two is beginning in early 2013, and should 20 episodes.
As anyone who watches this show knows, Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie LeClerc) were switched at birth. Bay grew up with the Kennish family (John, Kathryn and older brother Toby), while Daphne grew up believing Regina Vasquez (Constance Marie) was her biological mother. Daphne lost her hearing as a little girl, as she caught meningitis, and went to Carlton School for the Deaf along with her best friend Emmett (Sean Berdy).
When last we saw the characters, Bay and Daphne were dealing with heartbreak. Bay found out Emmett cheated on her with her former best friend Simone (Maiara Walsh), who was dating her brother Toby (Lucas Grabeel). Daphne found out that her boyfriend Wilke (Austin Butler) was leaving town to go to boarding school. Angelo (Gilles Marini) was back, but was being held in prison as he was illegal. John (D.W. Moffett) said the only way Angelo would marry an American citizen. John and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) having marital problems as John shared their secrets with a reporter years earlier. She started to get closer to lawyer Craig (Sam Page), but she rebuffed his advances.
I enjoyed both Bay with Emmett and Daphne with Wilke. Daphne obviously was jealous over "her sister" dating her best friend, thankfully Emmett didn't stray with Daphne. At least Emmett's cheating came after episodes of Bay and Emmett struggling due to his situation with his parents, who were in a custody battle over him. Bay chose to help his mother Melody, and once his father Cameron heard her reasons, gave full custody to Melody. Cameron was dating a deaf woman who was dealing drugs under their noses. That said, I hope if the show last long enough that Bay and Emmett find their way back together.
The rest of the season looks to be dealing with the fallout of these actions. Executive producer Lizzy Weiss did an interview on tvline.com previewing the upcoming episodes. Switched at Birth may seem like a show for teenagers, but it is much more than that. If someone is in the market for a new serialized program to view, Switched at Birth is one I'd easily recommend as it balances the stories of all the main characters in their universe.
