GH: The Biotoxin Story

Today on General Hospital, the citizens of Port Charles were cured of the biotoxin that was put in the water, which made people feverish until they succumbed. Jerry Jax (Sebastian Roche) wanted to make everyone suffer, and with the help of Ewen (Nathin Butler) and Joe (Richard Steinmetz), he was able to make it happen.

Jerry was blackmailing Ewen to do his evil bidding, as Ewen killed his father. The beginning of Jerry's plan was to immunize the two people in Port Charles he cared about: Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and his niece Josslyn. He tried to keep his brother Jax (Ingo Rademacher) out of town, but Jax made it back in time to get contaminated. Jax came back to check up on his little girl who nearly died.

Using a fake name, Jerry convinced Todd (Roger Howarth) to air his news on television. Todd had no idea what Jerry was doing, but the money was worth it. The broadcast  was interrupted by Jason, Jax and John McBain (Michael Easton). Jerry was arrested and taken to prison though he escaped.

Joe and some of his friends put the toxin in the water supply. Jerry had given him an antiserum, but Joe gave it to his new lover Tracy (Jane Elliot). Ironically Tracy was patient zero, and Patrick (Jason Thompson) was able to create one vial with a cure. Tracy has no idea that Joe saved her life nearly sacrificing himself. When he caught up with Jerry after he was really sick, he got another vial of the serum.

Ewen ended up dead as he kidnaped Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), after he knocked out Patrick (Jason Thompson). When Ewen inoculated Jerry's loved ones, he had no idea of Jerry's sick plan. Ewen became sick like everyone else. Jason (Steve Burton) caught up to Ewen and Elizabeth, and during the hostage situation shot Ewen causing him to die of his injuries at General Hospital. Jason was also shot, but it was a lot less severe. Before he died, Ewen tried to tell Patrick that Robin was alive, but was unsuccessful. There was one other known casualty: Cook at the Quartermaine mansion passed away off screen.

To get the synthesized cure, Todd (Roger Howarth) got the richest people in town together to pay off the ransom. They met at the Q mansion. Tracy, Todd, Johnny (Brandon Barash), Sonny (Maurice Benard), and Carly (Laura Wright) all decided to work together for this reason. Jerry wanted the exact amount of money as the dead man's hand. Later, it was revealed the reason Jerry wanted that money was he was being blackmailed for it, as he was suffering from radiation sickness. The cure would be paid for with this money. Jerry admitted his plans to Jax along with Ewen's part in their father's death.

While the money was being collected, Jerry went to Alexis' home and kidnapped her. Shawn (Sean Blakemore) followed trying to keep her safe, but Jerry nearly killed him. Upstairs Molly (Haley Pullos) and TJ got closer, they both discussed all the things they may never get to do like visit the Taj Mahal or make love.

There was a shootout when Jax, Jerry, Alexis, Sonny, Carly, Johnny and Todd are all together. Before that happened, Jax overheard enough of Johnny and Todd's conversation to realize that Johnny was lying to Carly and shared that news with his estranged wife. From the way Jax and Carly interacted, the love was still there, even if they moved on due to circumstances. There was a shootout and Johnny ended up getting shot. John ended up with the briefcase with the antitoxin. Lulu (Julie Marie Berman) finally caught up with Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and they along with John tried to defuse the bomb.Lulu said if she was going to die it would be with Dante. John and Dante opened the briefcase with the numbers of the dead man's hand, which started a counter. Thankfully Lulu had tools in her bag, that could cut the wires on the bomb. To stall, they had John call the FBI and then be placed on hold.  Before the last wires were cut, John sent them away to keep them safe. John decided to cut the red wire after looking at a picture on his phone of his estranged Llanview lady love Natalie. The bomb stopped and they were safe, but there was still a boom. The boat that Jax, Sonny and Jerry were on exploded as Alexis was already safe with Shawn. When Shawn and Alexis were alone, they made out on the pier. This was a "real location" not a set. The boat was called Grace. Sonny swam to shore, but no one knows if Jerry or Jax is alive. Jax though if dead, died a hero. Even Sonny thought so, which is saying a lot as Sonny loathes Jax.

Other scenes that happened before the cure was dispersed at the hospital. Jason and Sam were together and talking about her dream life if she had never spoken to Heather. Jason also started questioning the medical files GH had on Sam's baby. The blood types didn't make sense, and he wondered if Sam was right and her baby didn't die. Elizabeth and her brother Steve (Scott Reeves) talked about growing up together. Steve apologized for pushing her towards Ewen. Later Steve was with Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) and Kate (Kelly Sullivan). What is odd is that Olivia knew before anyone else that Ewen was bad and earlier she had seen the water was toxic. These periods of oddness started due to her being injected with acid by Heather (Robin Mattson). Steve and Kate found Olivia on the roof of the hospital. They were scared she was feeling a drug flashback, but she was just remembering the rain, though she was really psychic. Kate and Olivia also discussed how Olivia read Kate's diary when they were kids, and how even know they are still best friends and cousins.

Monica (Leslie Charleson) and Tracy sparred as usual. Tracy stole the serum from Monica to give to her father Edward (John Ingle). She felt Monica should give it to her for Alan's sake. When finding out what Tracy wanted to do he told his daughter, that he loved her. We then found out that he was selfless and wanted to give the serum to Emma (Brooklyn Silzer). In finding out what Edward did, Patrick welled up and told his daughter, she should thank him by acknowledging him in the window. That episode ended with a Tracy voiceover about Edward. The words could have been just as easily been said about John Ingle who plays Edward as it would be about the character. "A good life. A life filled with laughter, adventure, happiness. A life filled with love. Good fortune, friends and family, but not without pain, loss, sadness or regret. He wouldn’t change a thing, and if this is his time, he’s going to be reunited with the women he loves”

Once Jerry was stopped, and the CDC was testing the antiserum. The cure would be distributed the same way as the illness using water. Jon McLaughlin's I'll Follow You played in the background as everyone was using water. Water was passed out at the hospital for people to drink, planes were being sent to dose Port Charles with water (like Olivia saw), Lulu and Dante made love in the shower, TJ and Molly attacked Shawn and Alexis with water guns and then pitchers and glasses of water were involved. Outside of Alexis's home, Sam is with McBain, they nearly kissed, but ended up holding hands. It looks like Sam would have told Molly, she wants to be with John, if they hadn't been interrupted. On the hospital roof, Sonny and Katie celebrated their upcoming wedding by kissing. Jason came on the roof as well with a crutch and acknowledged his best friend. Jason was with Elizabeth and they hugged. Steve and Olivia made out in joy too.

So the umbrella story is over, and now the follow-up remains. A good amount of characters, were out of town for the duration of this plot. Hopefully, we will see their reactions to what their friends and family went through in these episodes. It will be interesting to see how the ratings go for the week due to the time slot change or if this story compelled people to try out General Hospital.
