This is my short review of the General Hospital book "The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli" as told to Diane Miller by Carolyn Hennesy. The tie-in book came out a few days before the cancellation notices of All My Children and One Life to Live. I had misplaced this book until recently, and only read it this weekend.
The novel is a series of short stories told by the Jackal aka Spinelli as played on screen by Bradford Anderson. Carolyn Hennesy who played Diane Miller is a tween author, and in the story is about adventures Spinelli shares with Diane.
This is a very quick read, and each story focuses on different people in Port Charles. It reminds me of a cross between the short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", by James Thurber which I read in school and is also was made into a movie, and a film noir.
Basically Spinelli aka the Jackal aka Grasshopper goes on adventures and saves the lives and livelihoods of other people. There are chapters focusing on Jax, Carly, Monica, Edward, Tracy, Alexis, Dante, Robin, Johnny, Luke, Sonny and Lulu among others. One chapter is a play on the classic movie "Some Like It Hot", but others may not have been so recognizable. Maxie is his non-wife at this point, though she doesn't have a story of her own.
Everything in this book is told from Spinelli's point of view, so if you don't like this character the book isn't for you. I enjoyed it for what it was, a fanciful tie-in to the General Hospital universe.
