OLTL: Greg goes up the River

Another casualty of Eli Clarke on One Life to Live was Dr. Greg Evans (Terrell Tilford). While he didn’t die, the actions he took while being blackmailed were illegal. Greg agreed to a plea bargain for 6 years and will serve at least 4 years in Statesville Prison until he is eligible for parole.

Greg had left his family except for the occasional visit for his job. So he was somewhat estranged when he came back to Llanview. Shaun resented him, while Destiny worshipped him. He did a miracle surgery on Matthew Buchanan allowing him to walk again. When Shaun was shot, he saved his brother. Eli found out that Greg’s sister Destiny was really his daughter. This secret motivated Greg’s actions and nearly caused him his life. Due to defying Eli, Greg put him on his hit list. He tried to unsuccessfully kill Greg twice first at the clinic where Greg was caring for Tea and then while recovering from that attack he tried again. Eli wanted Greg to kill Tea after allowing her to believe she had a brain tumor. While what Greg did was wrong, it is entirely possible that if he hadn’t been the person Eli was blackmailing Tea would have been murdered by Eli or her doctor.

The brilliant surgeon gave up everything to keep the truth from Destiny about her paternity. His parents adopted Destiny, and she had no idea of her situation. Once Greg woke from his coma on Destiny’s birthday he had to tell the truth about her. So Destiny’s “parents” were really her grandparents. Her entire life had been a lie, which is just the kind of news one wants to hear. While I think adoption is a wonderful thing most times, in soaps it tends to be looked down upon, which is disappointing.

There was more to be revealed in Greg’s past. Destiny’s mother was Charlene and she had died. Charlene and Shaun were a couple, but Shaun went to prison. During the time, Shaun was away Greg slept with her and got her pregnant. Charlene wanted to keep Destiny, but Greg wanted her to be given away. While they were arguing Charlene hurt her head and died. Greg allowed everyone to believe that Charlene just left the old neighborhood. He didn’t even share with his parents that he was there when she died. Instead of doing the right thing and calling the authorities, he disposed of her body, where it was not explained, which was completely devastating to both Shaun and Destiny. This was not brought up in the plea bargain that Greg signed, even if it was a horrid situation.

Greg will spend the next few years of his life in prison. Due to what he did lying about a patient’s health and allowing them to believe they were dying, he most likely will never practice medicine again. Destiny’s pain over the deception of her father and grandparents is not something to get over easily. With Greg behind bars, it is uncertain if he will ever get the chance to reconcile with his daughter. While what Greg did was wrong, he was a victim of circumstance and will pay for his ills. Thankfully he did the right thing before it was too late and kept Tea alive.
