OLTL: Goodbye to Cole

Wednesday, November 10 marked the last day of Cole Thornhart as his portrayer Brandon Buddy has left One Life to Life. Cole was sentenced for ten years in prison for shooting and killing Eli, who murdered many people including Kelly’s mother Melinda and Eli’s own brother Ross, blackmailed Greg and kidnapped Tea, Dani, Starr, and Hope. So while what Cole did was wrong, to many his actions were justified.

Cole shot an unarmed Eli after he believed Eli was responsible for Starr and Hope’s dying. He believed his live-in girlfriend and his daughter were lost in a building explosion. If this was Cole’s first crime, perhaps he could have gotten probation, but it was his third felony. Cole just graduated from high school 1 ½ years ago, and we’ve known him for four years. That’s a lot of crimes for a character that isn’t a villain.

Before shooting Eli, Cole and Starr were having relationship difficulties. While they still loved each other, people were getting in the way. Starr had James who became interested in her, but even though she liked him was committed to Cole. Hannah had a crush on Cole and was unhinged trying to make sure she had no competition to his affections. If only Starr would leave Cole for James, and all would be well. He had no idea that Hannah took Starr, Hope and James. Thankfully Hannah was caught, but unfortunately no one told Cole what was going on as he wouldn’t have shot Eli.

After the shooting, Cole’s mother Marty tried to cover for him and let the police believe she shot Eli. Since Cole’s fingerprints were on the gun, this ruse was unsuccessful. With the help of James, Starr and Cole got a bit more time together. They went a rundown motel (Minuteman), made love one last time and talked about the future they won’t have. Starr was willing to live a life on the run with Cole and their daughter, but he was not. Cole left the motel while Starr was in the shower. She was devastated finding his letter, and he turned himself into the police.

So now Cole is going to prison and will miss many years of Hope’s life. While he can send letters to his daughter, at this point she is too young to read and write them herself. As Cole doesn’t want Starr to wait for him, he ended their romantic relationship. Starr is going to have to raise their child with the help of friends and family.

Will Cole’s ten year sentence really be ten years; will he get out on appeal, be paroled or pardoned? Will he come back to find Starr, happy and in love with someone else? Will baby Hope call someone else Daddy or resent how her father wasn’t there for her? Is this going to make his mother Marty revert back to her wild days? While Cole’s story in Llanview has ended for now, he will be missed and not forgotten.
