Thoughts about "The Doctors" - July 1974

Another month's worth of episodes of "The Doctors" has aired on RetroTV. Below are my thoughts on what has aired for the month of July 1974.

Toni spent much of the month being lied to about Michael Paul, for the longest time no one told Toni the whole truth about her son. She was kept away from her baby, as he was on a respirator and in an incubator. It was understandable, when she couldn't get out of bed, though once she could sit in a wheelchair, she deserved to know everything. Eventually Matt shared all, and told Toni that if surgery was needed that she would see her boy beforehand. Maggie convinced Toni that it would be a good idea to knit something for Michael Paul.

Alan tried to stay away from Toni, due to his feelings for her. He was very unhappy with his marriage to Margo. Alan found out what Margo did to get the apartment, by borrowing money from his mother, and was livid. Margo visited Toni, and ran into Steve. She convinced him that she hasn't gotten another doctor, and for a change Margo was allowed to smile without any sort of agenda. Margo hasn't been monitoring her temperature to see if she is having problems ovulating as she feels that her marriage has improved. Let's hope Steve doesn't blab again to Alan.

Erich ran away to the hospital to find Lauri, after his argument with Carolee. Lauri and Hank brought him home, and Carolee was very grateful, as Steve was busy offscreen with the police, we didn't see him get the good news. Later in the month to thank Lauri and Hank, Carolee and Steve had a dinner party for them. The kids weren't there, but the guys grilled and the ladies had to do everything else. After Hank and Lauri left, Steve and Carolee got romantic. Rolf Krilling came for a visit, but only Carolee saw him. He was called back to Europe. Unknown to anyone, Karen as Erica, met Dr. Krilling's assistant, and they became friends. Another day, Carolee took Erich for doctors' appointments, which all happened off screen, though we found out about his love for sweet things and wanting multiple hamburgers at Pete's. Erich found out about how Carolee got him giraffe, and wanted to see a photo of Karen. Weirdly, Steve got the image from the hospital, as he didn't have any pictures. (Seriously, there were no photos of Karen in her purse with Erich…)

Luke went back to working for Penny, who was indicted. The entire case in court was off screen, though we were told everyone testified. Penny was annoyed that she had to hang out with Greta, while waiting for the news, but we didn't see them together. Althea found out about Penny's indictment from the reporter, before Luke arrived at her apartment. Later, Althea undid the top  of her dress, so Nick could listen to her heart. Ann ended her engagement with Nick, due to him refusing to get married unless they went to Mexico. She returned the ring, and told him she would go to Obanda to get her late husband Chris's award. Althea was frustrated over only being able to work two hours a day, and Matt and Maggie weren't going to interfere. That said, Ann confided in Maggie, which didn't help things with Nick. Cadman was back from the west coast, apologized to Nick for what was going on with Penny and how he was duped. Cadman and Martha flirted, while discussing flowers, which was surprisingly entertaining.

Those were the highlights of July 1974. There were no missing episodes, which was great. It was frustrating that Toni didn't get to see her baby. I appreciated that they allowed Matt and Maggie some happiness in their bedroom. Karen being back on screen even in Germany and then contrasting it with the happiness of Steve and Carolee before everything gets messed up for their family is one of the few things that doesn't bug. I'm not too happy with Alan these days, as he doesn't seem like Toni's friend, but someone who has an unhealthy interest in a postpartum widow. I hope they make him more likable, and soon.
