NATAS announced today the changes to next year's Daytime Emmys. I'm linking to the press release.
In non-soap news, entertainment news shows (aka infotainment shows) are now have their own category. They give examples such as Entertainment Tonight and Extra. It is about time that they have the option of this category instead of only being able to be nominated in the informational prime time Emmy category. (Shockingly blogger knows that infotainment is an actual word, but I digress.)
In soap news, there will be two main drama categories. The "Outstanding New Approaches Drama Series" is for web soaps that have had less than 35 episodes per year. Any web show is eligible. The "Outstanding Drama Series" category allows for any show that has produced at least 35 episodes, so All My Children and One Life to Live can participate in that category. Also any program that has that number of episodes can also submit to be nominated in any of the craft or acting award areas. It will be interesting to see if any independent web soaps in the future decide to produce enough episodes in a calendar year, to see if they can get nominated in the "Outstanding Drama Series" or if any of their crews, actors or musical contributors do the same. Since this was announced so late into 2013, I doubt any indy show will be able to create enough episodes in time.
