Days: JJ Finding Out About his Father

This past week, JJ (Casey Moss) found out the awful truth about his late father Jack Devereaux. This entry discusses this ongoing story.

JJ idolized his father Jack, and knew nothing of his past. Unfortunately, he found out from his Aunt Kayla (Mary Beth Evans), that Jack raped her when they were married years earlier. This news shocked JJ as no one ever told him what happened, not his mother Jennifer (Melissa Reeves), his sister Abby (Kate Mansi) or his Aunt Adrienne (Judi Evans). As a reaction to what happened, JJ destroyed a storefront with copies of his father's memoir. He was then arrested and is now awaiting his fate. It is unclear whether or not his cousin Sonny (Freddie Smith) knows, but his Uncle Justin (Wally Kurth) has agreed to help him with the law.

While I am enjoying this story, there are a few things that I wish that were different. I wish JJ had been told earlier as this history would become public fodder again with the publication of Jack's book. We are supposed to believe that no one in his family would realize that JJ would discover this information on his own. This story would have more resonance if Jack wasn't dead, but it also hurts the tale that his Uncle Steve isn't in town. Steve nearly killed Jack over what he did to Kayla, so he should figure into the story also.

The other thing I am wondering is will JJ learn about the rest of his family's ugliness. His biological grandfather Duke is also a rapist as he abused his Aunt Adrienne and in shock of the incest, she shot him dead. His adoptive grandfather Harper was in prison for killing people and nearly ended his Aunt Kayla's life. Does Jack's book ignore either of these events? If it does, I'm puzzled, if it doesn't why didn't anyone tell JJ. I can understand why JJ is freaking out, because no one would want to have to deal with such family baggage. It will be interesting to see if JJ continues to blame his family for their lies. Hopefully eventually he will find peace within himself even if he can't quickly forgive his loved ones.
