GH: Kate's Memory Has Returned

This week Kate Howard (Kelly Sullivan) realized why she developed the Connie personality. I'm not sure how I feel about this, but this entry has spoilers and speculation.

Kate found out the reason that she developed a second personality was to protect her from a crushing secret: her rape by Joe Scully Jr. and the resulting pregnancy. She left Sonny all those years ago, not to go away to school as everyone thought, but to have a baby conceived due to a violent act. Kate and Sonny (Maurice Benard) were waiting to be intimate so this had been her only sexual experience, so there is no doubt about the paternity. The priest in the neighborhood wouldn't help beyond saying you must have this child, so she left and moved into a boardinghouse. Kate was so ashamed by what happened she lied to Sonny as she blamed herself for letting Joe Jr. into her home. Also Kate knew that Sonny would have gone after Joe Jr., and then Joe's father would have gone after Sonny. Kate couldn't live with herself if she caused Sonny's death, so she left him.

The one positive about this situation is instead of being angry with Kate over what happened Sonny is supportive. He doesn't blame her for this act of violence. All of his anger is directed at the people who didn't help Kate and the man who raped her.

Since there have been spoilers about Richard Steinmetz who played Martin on Passions and Jeff on Loving, joining the cast of the son of a former character, it looks like he will be playing Joe Jr. At least he is realistically old enough to be the father of an adult character. What I also wonder is who will be Kate's child, that new kid Trey, in Kristina's story that Sonny already hates or someone else we haven't met yet. Kate's son should be around the same age as Dante, so it would be a stretch if Trey was the kid for that reason, though I wouldn't be surprised if they went in that direction.

The other caveat to this situation with Kate is how her other personality Connie agreed to lie about shooting out the tires on Anthony's (Bruce Weitz) car, as Johnny (Brandon Barash) did it. How long will it take Kate to remember this secret and deal with the guilt that her altar thought it was a good idea to take the fall for murdering two bystanders.

Hopefully this story will keep chugging away and soon we'll find out the rest of Kate's secrets. Since Todd (Roger Howarth) owns Crimson, Kate should continue to have story even after her personalities are reintegrated.
