AMC: Last Chance for Romance Marathon Part 1

This weekend I started watching SoapNet’s Last Chance for Romance marathon of All My Children episodes, which aired the two weeks ago Sunday, September 18, 2011. This entry is on the first three episodes.

The first episode was from September 3, 1980. It featured Cliff (Peter Bergman) and Nina’s (Taylor Miller) wedding, which was filmed on remote in Connecticut. The ceremony took place outside the fictionalized Cortlandt Manor. Meanwhile in town, Sybil was talking to Betsy about her pregnancy. Cliff was the father, and well he wanted nothing to do with her. Daisy (Nina’s mother) was there, with a veil on her face, and at this point it sounds like Nina had no idea she was her mom yet. Palmer knew (as did Phoebe and Ruth, but neither woman was at the ceremony.) Meanwhile Erica was in New York City, and lying to her husband Tom over why she was visiting. He thought she was with Brandon due to getting home décor, but she was trying out to be a model for him. It was their second anniversary, and due to this she had to reschedule their dinner. (We don’t see the dinner.) Erica’s brother Mark was also on and he was asking Ellen out to Erica and Tom’s dinner.

The second episode was from February 14, 1984. It featured Greg (Laurence Lau) and Jenny’s (Kim Delaney) wedding. The two characters loved each other and went through a lot to get to the altar, including her nearly marrying another man. Tad was accused of attacking Liza, but he wasn’t guilty. Adam wanted Erica, and Palmer was on too. At this point, it seems like the audience didn’t know the ugly history between the Cortlandt and Chandler families. This episode had a large cast, but much of the focus was on the wedding. It also had a flashback montage, which was fun.

The third episode was from March 4, 1993. I was watching AMC by then, but I have no memory of this episode. Then again it aired while I was in school and if I cut every time an important soap event happened I would have never graduated high school. In this episode, Tad (Michael E. Knight) and Dixie (Cady McClain) get back together. They were separated as Tad went over a bridge with Billy Clyde. When Tad came back to Pine Valley, it was as Ted Orsini, and he had the memories of another person. Dixie moved on with Brian. She had left town with Brian and JR. Charlie and Hayley found JR and Brian and tried to convince him to no longer run with the boy. Eventually JR was reunited with Palmer and Opal. Meanwhile Tad was doing his best to convince Dixie of his identity. He couldn’t recall their entire relationship, but eventually he said enough that she believed him. We also saw Gloria, who had cheated on Stuart with Adam and was wracked with guilt.

Those are my quick summaries of the first three episodes of the marathon. I was especially surprised by the Tad and Dixie episode that was chosen. The weddings of Cliff and Nina and Greg and Jenny are obvious picks. I expected to see a Tad and Dixie episode where they admitted their love for the first time, got engaged, got married or made love. Hopefully the last four episodes give me as much enjoyment as the first three did.
