OLTL: The End of Marty's Reign of Terror

This week Marty Saybrooke (Susan Haskell) ran away from Llanview for good. The character had become unhinged due to loss of her family.

Instead of being a helpful psychiatrist Marty Saybrooke was in need of one. She fell apart emotionally after she miscarried, and her adult son Cole killed Eli. Marty blamed Natalie for all of it as John chose to be with her, and as a forensics technician she figured out that Cole was the shooter and Marty was lying. On top of that, Natalie became pregnant with John’s child. So Natalie had everything Marty wanted, while she had nothing. While Marty does have a grandchild Hope, due to what was going on the baby’s grandfather Todd Manning kept her away from the baby. Ironically Todd raped Marty on two separate occasions. He got away with it both times, but obviously none of this helped her mental stability.

Natalie kidnapped Marty, who became delusional and believed she was the mother of Natalie’s son Liam. Before his birth, Marty changed the DNA tests, which made Natalie believe that John wasn’t the boy’s father. Marty also killed her psychiatrist Dr Buhari after she admitted to the DNA swap. (Unfortunately that death is the one thing that cannot ever be fixed.) This action is still playing out, as Natalie cannot remember that she knows the truth about her baby. She didn’t realize that Marty was dangerous when she confronted her on the roof. Marty threw her off the edge of the Angel Square Hotel. Natalie was fine except for a few minor bumps and bruises. Just prior to that, Marty also knifed Kelly Cramer for her interest in John. Kelly and John became occasional bed buddies as they both lost the people they wanted to be involved with siblings Joey and Natalie. Amidst all this violence, Marty kidnapped Liam. She thought if Natalie died, she could act as if she found the baby and raise him with John. This plan wouldn’t work, and she reached out to Todd. She stayed in the pool house with the baby. Marty got out of there before she could be arrested, but told Todd about Liam’s paternity, though he has said nothing.

In the end, Todd was the one who helped Marty depart Llanview. She had information that could bury him. Even though Marty was a fugitive, he arranged for a plane with enough fuel to get it across the pond. Marty wanted to tell the truth about John being the biological child of Natalie’s baby, but there was no time for that.

While Marty is separated from both her son and granddaughter, she still had a somewhat happy ending. We didn’t get to see Marty speak with him, but the husband she believed to be dead was alive. On the plane, Patrick Thornhart was waiting for her. Marty realized and wondered if things could be as they once were, even after all she had done; the lying, the killing, the DNA swapping. Like in the past, Patrick and Marty were back together again on the run from the world.

Actually Killing the Dr is the easiest thing to get out of since it was done off screen and anyone could have done it in St. Anne's. Brody after the Dr. told him Marty's secret and Marty just believed that she did it. The men of 21 because the Dr knew Marty was being drugged. After all she does have delusions much like Laura on GH this is an easy fix.

Actually the Dr.'s death was the easiest thing to get Marty off for. It was never shown on screen. Brody could have done it; the men of 21 could have done Marty had delusions she could have believed she did it but she really did not.
