Days: U-Turns and Upheavals

Last week news came out of the Days of Our Lives offices that things are going to be changing. While we knew about the writing swap, the cast is going to be looking different. This post includes spoilers and such from around the web and speculation based on comments made in Soap Opera Digest and other publications.

Some people seem to be happy about these changes while others are horrified. So far what we know is the following.

  1. Crystal Chappell (Dr. Carly Manning) is out and will be last taping later this month. She announced the news via her husband's (Michael Sabatino) twitter account. We have no information as to how the character will be written out of Salem.

  2. Louise Sorel (Vivian Alamain) is also out, but we don’t have a final airdate for the character. According to a report from Michael Logan at TvGuide, she will be moving back to her home in New York City.

  3. In the article with Louise, she spoiled the information that Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn (Marlena and John) will be back at Days later this year.

  4. Prior to this on Facebook and on SOD's website it was announced by Matthew Ashford (Jack Deveraux) that his was going to be rejoining the cast.

  5. Per SOD five or six actors will be in and the same amount or so will be out, and they will be refocusing the show on the core families. The new writers are on twitter, so it will be interesting to see if they give any hints as to what their character interests may be.

Okay with all that news what does it mean. Carly as a character has been self-medicating to deal with her problems. Will she hurt herself or another and get help for her addiction? Will she die or just fade away forgotten by everyone including her daughter Melanie?

A lot of people are upset about Chappell’s contract not being renewed. If these people who adopted the show just to see her leave and have Nielsen boxes, it may hurt the show in the long run. The other thing that went into my mind was will it affect her web show Venice. If she isn’t on Days will they disallow her from using current cast members? Is that the reason for the new web series The Grove or just her idea of branching out?

The next thought I have isn’t positive. While Crystal has fans she also has at least two groups of fans that don’t care for her character. Many Bo and Hope fans don’t get along with fans of Carly based on story concerns. They want her far away from their couple, and people who enjoyed Bo with Carly feel the same way about Hope. The other is the long rumored feud between Chappell and Hall, while it may be just tales out of school, it did come to mind when coupled with the news of Hall and Hogestyn returning as their characters were written out prior to Chappell being hired. At that point, it was coincidental, but now who knows.

The character of Vivian just got a son on canvas Quinn. Considering the character is a lowlife who is a drug dealer who goes into prostitution he may not be long for the show. Vivian also has been hanging out in the sidelines pretty aimless for months. The return could have been better, but alas it was not.

While Louise shared that the DH’s will be back, we have not heard confirmation from the actors or the program. If that is a hoax, there will be a lot of upset fans. The characters were written out in such a negative way, that one hopes if the return does happen there will be a reset button. I have no interest in seeing a paralyzed John. Perhaps John and Marlena will be there for Brady (his son) and Sami plus her children (her daughter).

The return of Jack Deveraux ties into the story of his former wife Jennifer and their daughter Abby. Both are back in Salem. Jennifer is moving on to Dr. Daniel Jonas, and feels like Jack abandoned her. She got a divorce from Jack while he was in absentia on a walkabout. Hopefully that was just a ruse and there is more to the story than that.

The next few months with these changes and others may be very interesting. I do not plan to get my hopes up, but hopefully the door will be open for the characters of Carly and Vivian. Also I wish good luck to the new writing team.
