This summer I took a chance by watching ABCFamily’s show Switched at Birth. As I have no prime time shows on Monday nights during the summer, I figured why not. The fact that it did wonderfully in the ratings for its first episode surprised me and I decided to continue to watch the program.
“Switched at Birth” is about two teenage girls from Kansas who were born on the day and went home with women who weren’t their biological mothers. Bay was brought up with two loving parents and an older brother in a rich neighborhood. Daphne was brought up by a single mother, and lost her hearing due to illness as a small child.
The story began with Bay in school testing her blood type as part of science lab. She discovered that she was AB, which was impossible with her parents being John and Kathryn. DNA testing was done that proved they weren’t her parents. Meanwhile, Daphne has a happy life at her school for the deaf, spending time with her best friend Emmett and being raised by Regina and her grandma.
Regina was having financial problems, which would take them out of town. So the girls could get to know their biological families, Regina, Daphne and Grandma Vasquez moved into the guesthouse on the Kennish property. This was an adjustment for everyone.
Bay is rebellious and is having a hard time dealing with this situation. Regina is giving Bay space, while her parents are showering Daphne with things. Daphne being deaf has caused awkward moments, as the Kennishes don’t know how to deal with someone who cannot hear. While Daphne now has a father, Bay has no idea who her biological dad is. This looks to be a source of conflict.
As a soapy element, the girls each have love interests. Bay’s relationship with Liam fell apart as she didn’t share her situation with him. Now Liam is dating Daphne and he has no idea of their connection. Bay is seeing Ty, a friend of the Vasquez family, who Daphne looks to like an older brother.
It will be interesting to see where all of this goes, as the neighbors now know. They had assumed John cheated on Kathryn with Regina, but hearing what really happened was a shock. This is far from a normal situation. Will everyone change for the better and become closer or will everything become even more contentious and fall apart for good? Hopefully during the rest of this summer run the program will be as interesting as the first three episode have been.
