AMC: The Death of Baby Sara

On All My Children, Madison North and Ryan Lavery’s premature daughter Sara died soon after her birth. The little one developed pneumonia and couldn’t fight off the infection. Her death was tragic for all that cared about her.

This story began as a triangle/quadrangle of sorts. Ryan and Greenlee had been engaged and on their wedding day, she was presumed dead. David Hayward as a doctor was able to bring Greenlee back to life. They married as friends, but David loved her romantically and they were intimate. During this time, Ryan got involved with Madison. Initially David encouraged Madison to date Ryan. She did love him, knowing that his heart was still with Greenlee. Eventually he broke up with Madison as Greenlee left David. Madison discovered she was pregnant and didn’t want Ryan to be with her for that reason alone, so she kept it a secret. Madison had her friends Randi and Frankie at her side helping her decide what to do. She contemplated an abortion, though changed her mind. Months before Ryan found out Greenlee discovered the pregnancy. They were married, but now it has been revealed it wasn’t legal.

To keep Madison busy and away from Ryan, Greenlee had an idea. She helped get Scott Chandler out of prison, by offering him a job at the hospital. Scott started to woo Madison, but quickly the feelings became real for both of them. He lied about being Sara’s father, but Ryan figured it out once the conception date was revealed. Ryan was hurt that no one told him the truth. In time, Scott came to love both Madison and her baby. Considering a loving adoptive parent raised Scott, it made sense that he saw past biology.

Madison helped Ryan with Emma. The little girl couldn’t stand Greenlee, but loved Madison, as her mother Annie had no problems with Ms. North. She was beyond thrilled when she found out about the baby being her half-sister. Greenlee’s action against Madison was revealed. Madison was devastated and it was partially to blame for the accident that caused Madison to go into labor early.

When Sara was born, Madison and Scott were estranged and Ryan and Greenlee were at odds. Madison never even got to hold her baby, and this situation made her completely shut down. She wanted her daughter back, but nothing would change. Ryan has already lost children, so he was more in control of his feelings. David and Madison spoke as he talked about how his infant daughter Leora died. Ryan and Greenlee shared this news with Emma.

An off screen funeral took place and only Madison and Ryan attended per her request. On the way there, they spoke with Jesse and Angie who gave them comforting words. Of course, Jesse went through losing their daughter, and Angie has no idea they lost their baby. Greenlee told Scott to not give up, and helped him pack away the items Scott and Madison bought for Sara. Scott watched from far away, but she allowed him to go say goodbye with her. Madison went home to her apartment with Scott. She found all of Sara’s things packed away. Scott shared with her how he got her an apartment that was near the hospital and close to Sara’s grave. She thanked him, but said she was going to stand on her own to feet and not take help from Ryan or him.

Who knows what will happen now with the rewriting and the end of the series? Greenlee and Ryan seem stronger than ever even if they aren't legally married, but this loss may be too much for Scott and Madison to overcome.
