Y&R: Cane's Death

Cane Ashby played by Daniel Goddard died recently on The Young and The Restless. This entry is about his death, funeral and through his burial. In the last week, there have been rumors that the death may have been exaggerated, but at this point we’ve seen his body in a coffin, so one should figure he has perished.

Cane died a hero’s death as a man named Blake was gunning for him and pulled a gun on his wife Lily and their twins Charlie and Matilda. An aria from the opera La Wally called "Ebben? Ne andrĂ² lontana" played in the background. Oddly enough in that story, the main character leaves home never to return just like Cane. She kills herself at the end of the opera by throwing herself into an avalanche. Unfortunately, Cane died with some secrets, which could come back to haunt his family. Part of this was muddy for me, so I apologize if there is a bit of confusion. Cane’s family is part of an organized crime group. He lied about his identity when he came to Genoa City and made believe he was Jill’s son Phillip. Where it is confusing at least to me is they weren’t 100% as to what kind of illegal business it was beyond farm animals. Cane was being blackmailed to pay off the people he sent to prison. The total amount he owed is a question mark. That’s what made no sense, Kay and Jill are both extremely rich people, couldn’t they have paid off these people. If all they wanted was money, okay, but it seemed to be a lot bigger of a reason.

Cane’s father Colin came to Genoa City, and started romancing Jill. Whether it was to get under Cane’s skin, by getting close to his surrogate mother or to let him get nearer to Cane’s family, I don’t know. While Colin didn’t want people to know he was Cane’s father, there is no way that he wanted his son dead. He just wanted to be able to marry Jill. There seems to be a mystery with this part of the story. Everyone in town except for Lily and Jill feel that Colin is bad news. Paul is investigating him, but has come up with nothing yet. While everyone knows Colin was in prison in Australia, they do not know anything about any treacherous actions. Colin lost his daughter Samantha to violence and now he was at fault for Cane’s death. He has a lot of guilt, and no one reasons it is because Cane was his child.

Lily is taking Cane’s death hard. Then again that is completely understandable. She beat cancer, and now she sees her husband die violently in front of her on the steps of a church. Lily has been talking to Cane, to try and cope. Traci tried to comfort her as well as Neil and Kay. They all know what it is like to love and lose someone way too soon.

So the question remains, will Colin pay for his part in Cane’s death? Will anyone realize their connection and do something about it? How will Lily deal with raising the twins alone? In the future, will this also influence the lives of the rest of Genoa City? These are all things we have to stay tuned and hope they delve into in the future.
