Here are my thoughts on the pre-nominations. At this point, we do not know what these performers will submit to attempt to win a Daytime Emmy. Looking from the original ballot to the pre-nomination list, the list was cut from 142 people to 80. Usually the final tally of nominees is around 30. This is the last year of eligibility for As the World Turns, so it is possible we may have less nominees in the future. The people on this list will get to pick scenes. The judges will screen the material at home and this one round will determine the nominees and final winners. While that is not my favorite style of judging, nothing I can do about it.
The Lead Actor category started with 23 names which have now been cut down to 14. Four programs had automatic bids as only two actors submitted their names in this category (ATWT, B&B, GH and OLTL). There is really no surprise if the people listed are the only choices for a particular program. Days and Y&R had four choices and AMC had seven. I can understand having four people listed, but seven. If I think about who carried story for last year, who was chosen was not outrageous making me feel the need to hit my head against the wall. Everyone listed was part of their program for the entire year, and had story, so no one with a two month stint is going to win. I was kind of surprised that Eric Braeden (Victor on Y&R) wasn’t nominated, but with the controversy over his contract perhaps instead of basing it on acting kept that in mind.
Outstanding Lead Actor Pre-Nominees:
All My Children: Ricky Paull Goldin (Jake) and Michael E. Knight (Tad)
As the World Turns: Jon Lindstrom (Craig) and Michael Park (Jack)
The Bold and the Beautiful: Don Diamont (Bill) and Jack Wagner (Nick)
Days of Our Lives: Peter Reckell (Bo) and James Scott (EJ)
General Hospital: Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Steve Burton (Jason)
One Life to Live: Jerry verDorn (Clint) and Robert S. Woods (Bo)
The Young and the Restless: Peter Bergman (Jack) and Christian LeBlanc (Michael)
The Lead Actress category started with 24 names which have now been cut down to 15. Only two shows had automatic bids (ATWT and GH). The other shows had 3-5 potential choices. Susan Lucci not getting nominated was surprising as she was on the pre-ballot. Erika Slezak and Melody Thomas Scott also did not get any further this year. With how it works that am actor from one show is able to vote for whomever they like from different programs, does influence things. I’m kind of surprised by who got listed from OLTL, but that show was strange this year with the actress category as some performers who were usually in the lead category went to supporting.
Outstanding Lead Actress Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Rebecca Budig (Greenlee), Alicia Minshew (Kendall) and Debbi Morgan (Angie)
ATWT: Maura West (Carly) and Colleen Zenk (Barbara)
B&B: Susan Flannery (Stephanie) and Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke)
Days: Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Alison Sweeney (Sami)
GH: Kelly Monaco (Sam) and Laura Wright (Carly)
OLTL: Kassie DePaiva (Blair) and Gina Tognoni (Kelly)
Y&R: Jeanne Cooper (Kay) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis)
The Supporting Actor category started with 26 names which have now been cut down to 14. Only ATWT had automatic bids. The other shows had 3 or 4 names to choose from except Y&R which had 7. Yes Dominic Zamprogna (Dante on Y&R) didn’t get nominated, but considering his air time, I would put him in the lead category. Having him in supporting may not have done him any favors. The Days actors were in the strong B story for most of the year as were the ones from OLTL. I don’t consider Jacob Young or Billy Miller as supporting actors, based on airtime either.
Supporting Actor Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Cornelius Smith, Jr. (Frankie) and Jacob Young (JR)
ATWT: Trent Dawson (Henry) and Eric Sheffer Stevens (Reid)
B&B: Patrick Duffy (Stephen) and Rick Hearst (Whip)
Days: Shawn Christian (Daniel) and Jay Johnson (Philip)
GH: Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) and Jason Thompson (Patrick)
OLTL: Brian Kerwin (Charlie) and Mark Lawson (Brody)
Y&R: Doug Davidson (Paul) and Billy Miller (Billy)
The Supporting Actress category started with 40 names which have now been cut down to 16. Only ATWT which started with three names ended with three. AMC had 8 performers listed and Y&R had 9. The other shows had 5 each. That’s a huge amount of people thinking they are worthy of an award for their work last year. Looking at this category, makes me wish they would bring back the guest award for people who only had short term story. The other thing with so many choices snubs are very likely.
Outstanding Supporting Actress Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Melissa Claire Egan (Annie) and Chrishell Stause (Amanda)
ATWT: Terri Conn (Colombino) (Katie), Lesli Kay (Molly) and Julie Pinson (Janet)
B&B: Adrienne Frantz (Amber) and Heather Tom (Katie)
Days: Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe) and Arianne Zucker (Nicole)
GH: Julie Marie Berman (Lulu) and Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis)
OLTL: Robin Strasser (Dorian) and Bree Williamson (Jessica)
Y&R: Tricia Cast (Nina), Amelia Heinle (Victoria) and Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe)
The Younger Actor category started with 12 names which have now been cut down to 10. AMC, ATWT, B&B and Days had automatic bids. There was no one interested and eligible for Y&R. Only GH and OLTL had any sort of contest to get a pre-nomination.
Outstanding Younger Actor Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Finn Wittrock (Damon)
ATWT: Mick Hazen (Parker)
B&B: Scott Clifton (Liam) and Zack Conroy (Oliver)
Days: Casey Deidrick (Chad) and Chandler Massey (Will)
GH: Chad Duell (Michael) and Nathan Parsons (Ethan)
OLTL: Eddie Alderson (Matthew) and David A. Gregory (Ford)
The Younger Actress category started with 17 names which have now been cut down to 11. ATWT did not have anyone interested in being nominated. AMC, GH & Y&R had automatic bids. B&B, Days and OLTL had actual contests for nominations.
Outstanding Younger Actress Pre-Nominees:
AMC: Brittany Allen (Marissa) and Natalie Hall (Colby)
B&B: Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) and Kim Matula (Hope)
Days: Molly Burnett (Melanie) and Shelley Hennig (Stephanie)
GH: Lexi Ainsworth (Kristina) and Haley Pullos (Molly)
OLTL: Kristen Alderson (Starr) and Brittany Underwood (Langston)
Y&R: Emily O'Brien (Jana)
As always it will be interesting to see how things shake out on the final nominee list. Will there be snubs? Always, but hopefully everyone will have at least one performer they enjoy win an award.
This blog is mainly about soaps, though it will sometimes veer into other topics. The main purpose is to provide a space for when board discussion isn't enough as sometimes my thoughts and feelings take on a life of their own. Even if some of the shows I enjoy have been cancelled, I will continue to post about them. They may take away the shows, but they can't destroy the love.
